More about this title

About the Composer: Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin

Gordon Goodwin began composing full arrangements at an age when most musicians are still learning to read notation. By thirteen, he had already written his first big band chart, Hang Loose, signaling the emergence of a voice that would reshape contemporary jazz writing. His work in television and film scoring earned him three Emmy awards and multiple Grammy nominations, with his orchestrations featured in blockbuster films including Bad Boys II, Con Air, Enemy of the State, and Remember the Titans.

Beyond Hollywood, Goodwin has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Christina Aguilera, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, and Toni Braxton. He founded Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band in 2000, establishing it as one of Los Angeles's premier contemporary big band ensembles. The ensemble's debut album, Swingin' for the Fences, made history as the first commercially released DVD audio title and earned two Grammy nominations, with subsequent releases garnering additional Grammy consideration.

Why we love this

Goodwin writes big band charts that sound effortless but demand real musicianship, and Count Bubba's Revenge exemplifies that balance perfectly. The shuffle swing groove is immediately infectious, yet the section trading and ad libitum passages keep players engaged beyond simply executing the written parts. Directors at this level appreciate that the piece feels contemporary and exciting without requiring a vast instrumentation palette or unrealistic technical demands.

What to expect

Count Bubba's Revenge swings with propulsive momentum, building from a driving shuffle into moments of controlled chaos where sections answer and challenge each other. The a cappella breaks offer brief respite, but the overall arc demands commitment and energy, leaving both players and listeners with an unmistakable sense of excitement and forward motion.

Who it's for

Advanced jazz ensembles ready to tackle a piece with genuine compositional sophistication and contemporary style. Soloists in your section (tenor and baritone saxes, trumpet, trombone, and keyboard players) need to be confident improvisers comfortable with trading phrases and responding to ensemble energy in real time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the shuffle feel first and foremost. Lock the rhythm section (bass and drums) into that pocket early in rehearsals so the ensemble knows what groove they're riding. Once the foundation is solid, the energy builds naturally.
  • Highlight the sectional trades rather than trying to balance everyone equally. When saxes have the melody, let them bloom; when brass answer, give them room. The back-and-forth momentum is what makes this chart breathe.
  • Give soloists space to breathe, both literally and rhythmically. The tenor, baritone, trumpet, trombone, and piano or guitar solo passages are designed for personality and interpretation. Over-conducting these sections will drain them of vitality.
  • Pay attention to the a cappella moments. These passages are brief snapshots where the ensemble must nail intonation and timing without rhythmic support. Clean these up thoroughly in sectional rehearsals.

How to use it

This is a contest or festival showcase piece that commands attention from the downbeat. Program it mid-set or as a powerful closer when your ensemble's energy and execution are at their peak. The 6:24 runtime and infectious groove make it memorable enough to anchor a concert while allowing programming flexibility around lighter or heavier adjacent works.

Skills your students will build

  • Shuffle swing articulation and feel across the entire ensemble
  • Sectional balance and call-and-response dialogue between brass and reeds
  • Solo improvisation with structured trading and head arrangements
  • Intonation and ensemble listening in a cappella passages
  • Ensemble responsiveness to expressive conducting and dynamic shaping
