About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of real-world experience as a performer, composer, and arranger to everything he writes. He studied trumpet with some of the era's finest pedagogues and performed with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra, the Miami Opera Company, and traveling dance bands across the country. His background in both concert and popular idioms informs his arranging voice.

With over 600 publications to his name, Bullock has written extensively for concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band. He spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in the classroom and served as assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His work on the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and as a contributing arranger for Alfred Music's Music Expressions curriculum reflects his commitment to both pedagogical excellence and practical classroom application.

Why we love this

Bullock understands what makes the big band era sound like itself, and these arrangements preserve that character while making it playable for small combos. Seven standards and jazz classics arranged in compatible keys means you can actually mix and match tunes or run through the whole book in a single rehearsal without constant transposition headaches. The writing balances accessibility with authentic swing feel, so your students sound like they're playing real jazz, not a simplified version of it.

What to expect

Swinging, accessible, and steeped in the joy of the 1940s without feeling like a museum piece. These tunes have the warmth and lyricism of their era but move with contemporary ease. Whether you're playing the melancholy beauty of Georgia on My Mind or the pure fun of C Jam Blues, the arrangements invite you into a style that shaped everything that came after.

Who it's for

Jazz combos of any size from two players onward, whether you're a high school jazz band looking to break into small-group playing or a college ensemble wanting flexible repertoire that works for varying instrumentation. B-flat players include saxophonists, trumpeters, and clarinetists looking for practical big band standards that sound authentic without requiring a full 16-piece ensemble.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the groove in the rhythm section before adding the melody line. These tunes live or die by how locked the accompaniment is.
  • Pay attention to the articulation markings even in passages that feel straightforward. The swing style depends on precise attacks and releases.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment (if available separately) to learn the original feel before rehearsing with your combo members.
  • Balance the melody against the background parts. Bullock's voicings are lean, so overplaying any single voice will throw off the sound.

How to use it

Tuck these into a jazz history concert or a pops program where you want to bridge generations of listeners. The combination of well-known standards (Georgia on My Mind, Over the Rainbow) with deeper cuts (In a Mellow Tone, Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me) gives you options for different audience contexts. Since all seven tunes work in compatible keys, you can program them as a medley or as individual features for different combo lineups.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading jazz chord changes and comping patterns
  • Playing with swing articulation and phrasing
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment in small ensemble settings
  • Transposing and adapting parts for flexible instrumentation
  • Internalizing the harmonic language of standards from the big band era
