More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has become one of the most performed composers in contemporary choral music, with more than 450 works in print across choral literature, vocal resources, and children's musicals. His educational materials including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique have shaped how singers develop foundational skills, and his arrangements appear in choirs across the globe.

Beyond the page, Beck remains actively engaged as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. He holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, and his commitment to choral artistry extends through his work with honor choirs, all-state ensembles, and musical theatre. A tenor vocalist himself, he sings with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has recorded as a studio artist for Alfred Music since 1992.

Why we love this

Andy Beck writes for 2-part choirs with the clarity and musicality of someone who understands exactly what young or developing singers can accomplish. This piece sits comfortably in the accessible range while avoiding the simplistic, giving your singers genuine musical material to shape and interpret.

What to expect

Clouds evokes a quiet, observant mood; the text and musical setting invite singers to slow down and notice detail. The piece moves without urgency, allowing space for reflection and creating an intimate sound that requires singers to listen closely to one another.

Who it's for

This octavo serves middle school, high school, and community choirs seeking accessible but substantive secular repertoire. It's equally suited for choirs just beginning 2-part harmony and for developing ensembles looking to strengthen their sense of blend and musical line.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts so that whichever carries the primary melody remains clearly audible; don't let the accompanimental voice mask the song.
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to establish the tempo and harmonic foundation, then have singers track their own parts independently before blending.
  • Shape phrases across the natural language rhythms rather than stopping at barlines; this creates line and prevents choppy phrasing in 2-part writing.

How to use it

Program this early in a concert to establish a reflective tone, or use it as a transition piece between more energetic selections. Its accessible 2-part writing makes it an excellent choice for a program that aims to include developing singers without sacrificing musical substance.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending two independent melodic lines
  • Sustaining tone over longer phrases without forcing volume
  • Listening to harmonic intervals and adjusting intonation
  • Following accompaniment cues while maintaining ensemble independence
