Clockworks: String Orchestra, Score and Parts

Beginning string orchestras and novice players who are ready to move past unison playing but still need focused technical work. The pizzicato pulse gives younger players a concrete rhythmic anchor, while the melodic trading allows each section to experience being featured.

• Keep the first violin pizzicato perfectly steady and even in tone. This is your metronome; any rushing or dragging will throw off the whole effect.
• Balance the melody carefully as it passes between sections. Players holding the pulse need to stay slightly under the soloists so the tune always projects clearly.
• Sustain the low-register harmony parts with a warm, supported tone even though the front of the piece belongs to the pizzicato and melody.

Program this early in a concert when attention spans are fresh and the audience appreciates straightforward storytelling. It pairs naturally with other descriptive pieces at the Grade 1-2 level and gives you a chance to highlight each section's playing without lengthy technical demands.
