About the Composer: Jack Wilds

Jack Wilds composes music across an expansive age range, from elementary children's choirs through professional ensembles. His works draw inspiration from visual art, philosophy, poetry, and musical tradition to create pieces that meet performers at their level while pushing toward genuine artistry. Chamber works by Wilds have been performed by the Attacca Quartet, members of the New York Philharmonic and Atlanta Symphony, and ensembles at the University of Texas, while his compositions appear on festival required lists across multiple continents.
Wilds brings direct teaching experience to his writing, having spent years as a public school band director before joining the faculty at Texas State University, where he teaches composition, theory, ear training, and music technology. He serves as Co-Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in San Marcos and remains active as a clinician and adjudicator. His output for developing musicians includes over 40 publications for wind band and choir, with regular performances at major conferences including the Midwest Clinic.
Why we love this
Wilds nails the Grade 1.5 sweet spot by layering genuine musical content beneath an accessible, visually compelling narrative. The piece builds momentum through clear sectional contrasts without demanding technical prowess, meaning even developing musicians experience authentic compositional architecture. The western campfire premise gives students a concrete dramatic anchor, but the music earns its energy through folk melody and orchestration rather than gimmick alone.
What to expect
Campfire warmth that catches fire. The opening settles you by the flames in a quiet moment, then suddenly the band springs to life with infectious, percussive energy. As themes accumulate and the harmonies grow jagged, you feel the dance intensify, building toward a final, full-voiced cheer that leaves everyone grinning.
Who it's for
Developing concert bands ready to move beyond unison melodies and simple accompanying figures. This work suits ensembles with mixed instrumentation maturity, since the Grade 1.5 level accommodates musicians still building facility while keeping the experience musically satisfying for more advanced players through orchestration and harmonic interest.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the introduction to establish calm before the energy shift; let the peaceful opening breathe so the transition to the dance tune lands with genuine contrast.
- Keep articulation crisp in the dance section to maintain the raucous, spontaneous character without sacrificing ensemble blend.
- Support the lower voices during the thematic combination near the end; balance matters as much as volume when multiple folk tunes layer together.
- Lean into the chromaticism in the middle section for color and dramatic effect; this moment separates the piece from a straightforward folk arrangement.
How to use it
Program this as a pacing tool in a concert built around American themes or folk traditions; its theatrical arc and infectious spirit energize audiences between heavier repertoire. The piece also shines as a festival selection where judges value both developmental appropriateness and genuine musicality, or as a celebratory encore that ends a concert on a high, unifying note.
