Description
Chop-Monster is a sequential jazz improvisation method by acclaimed jazz pianist and educator Shelly Berg that utilizes a "call-and-response" approach: students listen to a jazz idea, imitate it until it is internalized, and then "try it on their own." In Chop-Monster 1, students will hear and improvise to the Ima7, iimi7, and V7 chords in the key of B-flat, plus a basic blues progression. In Chop-Monster 2 students will hear and improvise to the ii-V-I progression in three keys (concert B-flat, E-flat, F).

About the Author: Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg

Shelly Berg commands the jazz piano with the physicality and precision of a world-class athlete. The Los Angeles Times describes him as "a powerhouse jazz pianist who always swings hard," and his discography reflects decades of performing at the highest level: his album The Will spent eight weeks in the Top Ten of the U.S. Jazz Radio Charts, and he was a finalist in the 1988 Great American Jazz Piano Competition. Dave Brubeck himself praised Berg's "total command of his instrument."

Beyond the stage, Berg has shaped jazz education from multiple angles. He chairs the Jazz Studies program at USC's Thornton School of Music and served as Past President of the International Association for Jazz Education. His film and television orchestrations span Warner Bros., Fox, NBC, and HBO productions; he has arranged for major recording artists including Kiss and Chicago. The Chop-Monster series and his Goal-Note Method represent his commitment to making serious jazz pedagogy accessible to students at all levels.

Why we love this

Book 2 takes what students learned about isolated chord tones and puts them into genuine jazz territory: the ii-V-I progression, the harmonic backbone of standard jazz repertoire. By cycling through three keys, students build the muscle memory and ear training they'll need to navigate real tunes, and the call-and-response structure keeps the practice focused and rewarding rather than abstract.

What to expect

The ii-V-I progression has a forward momentum that pulls you along naturally. When you lock into the changes across all three keys, you start to hear the universal shape beneath the surface details, and improvisation shifts from memorization to genuine music-making.

Who it's for

Jazz ensemble students ready to move beyond basic vocabulary into the harmonic language of real standards and blues tunes. This book assumes you've worked through Chop-Monster 1 and are comfortable with fundamental improvisation concepts; Book 2 challenges you to apply them across multiple tonal centers and chord progressions.

How to get the most out of it

  • Sing the phrases out loud before playing them. The internalization happens in your ear first; the horn follows.
  • Record yourself and listen back without judgment. You're training your ear to hear what you're doing, not what you think you're doing.
  • Start slow enough that you can nail each phrase cleanly. Speed comes naturally once the shapes live in your fingers.
  • Focus on one key until you can swap between ii-V-I changes without hesitation, then move to the next key.

How to use it

Assign this systematically as part of your jazz ensemble's warm-up rotation or as independent study material for students serious about soloing. The 40-page format makes it manageable alongside other ensemble repertoire without overwhelming students' practice time.

Skills your students will build

  • ii-V-I progression recognition and improvisation across three concert keys (B-flat, E-flat, F)
  • Internalization of jazz melodic shapes through call-and-response listening
  • Chord tone navigation and voice leading within functional harmony
  • Transposition fluency across trombone 4 parts and written concert pitches
