Description
Composers first began writing character pieces in the Romantic period as a personal, inward-looking form of musical expression, on a smaller scale than sonatas of the Classical period. These new character pieces emulate this important art form and are carefully graded for students at the late elementary to early intermediate level. Some are bold in character, while others are lyrical and introspective. These moods are suggested by each title. Titles: The Balance Beam * The Challenge * Gentle Ocean Waves * Gospel Sing * A Moment in Time * My Heart Sings * The Organ Grinder * Reflection * Sea Treasures * The Secret * Song of the Matador * Wind Chimes A Federation Festivals 2020-2024 selection. More about this title

About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has shaped piano pedagogy for over three decades through her prolific output of educational compositions. Since joining Alfred Music Publishing in 1989, she has established herself as one of the most widely performed contemporary composers in student repertoire, with particular strength in writing that meets students where they are developmentally while maintaining artistic integrity.

Mier's work reflects her deep experience as a studio teacher, church musician, and collaborative pianist. A Florida State University graduate and certified piano teacher through MTNA, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers, she brings classroom insight to every piece she writes. Her compositions appear regularly in the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival Bulletin, and she has presented pedagogy workshops internationally and at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association Conference, the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, and numerous state conventions. She is a co-author of Alfred's Premier Piano Course and has published more than 200 educational works.

Why we love this

Mier captures the essence of Romantic character pieces without overwhelming developing pianists. Each piece stands alone with genuine musical personality, making this collection ideal for building interpretive confidence and for selecting individual recital repertoire that connects emotionally with audiences.

What to expect

This collection invites pianists into the intimate world of Romantic expression. Moments range from the bold energy of "The Challenge" and "Song of the Matador" to the hushed introspection of "Reflection" and "The Secret," with lyrical pieces like "Gentle Ocean Waves" and "My Heart Sings" offering respite between more dramatic selections. Each piece breathes with its own temperament.

Who it's for

Late elementary and early intermediate pianists ready to move beyond exercise-based repertoire and explore pieces with distinct musical character. Students preparing for festival performances, recitals, or those seeking to deepen their understanding of Romantic idiom will find accessible yet substantive material here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Allow the titles to guide your interpretive choices. The mood suggested by each title is integral to the piece, not decorative; use it as your entry point for understanding the harmonic and melodic gestures Mier has written.
  • Balance technical clarity with expressive phrasing. These pieces demand clean technique but will feel mechanical without attention to the lyrical contours and dynamic shapes within each phrase.
  • Experiment with the sustain pedal deliberately. Romantic-style harmony benefits from selective pedaling, but test different points of entry and release to avoid muddiness while supporting the harmonic color.

How to use it

Select individual pieces for student recitals where emotional depth and personal expression matter as much as technical display. The variety of character and mood across the twelve pieces makes this collection excellent for curating a thematic concert or festival program, or for pairing contrasting selections to showcase a student's range. The Federation Festivals 2024-2028 designation confirms these pieces meet standards for competitive performance.

Skills your students will build

  • Interpreting mood and character through harmonic and melodic choices
  • Sustain pedal control and selective harmonic color
  • Phrasing and shaping across lyrical and dramatic passages
  • Expression within accessible technical frameworks
