Description
Using the traditional "Cantate Domino" text, this piece is ideal for developing ensembles. The stackable melody spans a conservative six-note range that works well for changing voices, and an additive form makes part singing intuitive. In the middle, a lyrical English section offers contrast before returning to the main theme and building to a spirited, forte conclusion. Effective any time of year, but especially useful at the start of school.

Don't just read it, hear it, play along with it, and watch your students grow with it. In MakeMusic Cloud, Cantate Canon: 2-Part/SSA Choral Octavo comes alive with professional accompaniment, adjustable tempo, and built-in practice tools that turn solo practice into real progress.

About the Composer: Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows composes music across all ensemble types and age levels, from children's choirs to adult festivals. His works appear regularly on state and festival lists, and he fields commissions throughout the year from groups seeking fresh, teachable repertoire.

Burrows holds degrees in music education from Southern Methodist University and conducting from Texas Christian University. He serves as Director of Children's Ministries at FUMC in Fort Worth, Texas, where he lives with his wife Nina and their two daughters.

Why we love this

Burrows has written a piece that does exactly what developing choirs need: it teaches part singing through melody, not obstacles. The additive form means singers build confidence incrementally, the six-note range accommodates changing voices without strain, and the contrasting English section breaks up the Latin text in ways that hold young singers' attention through the whole piece.

What to expect

The piece opens with quiet confidence, the Latin text grounding it in tradition while the conservative range keeps everything accessible. The English middle section brings warmth and lyrical ease before the return to the main theme gains momentum and energy, culminating in a spirited, full-voiced moment that feels genuinely earned rather than forced.

Who it's for

This piece fits developing choirs learning to balance multiple melodic lines without overextending vocal ranges. It works equally well for mixed-voice ensembles singing SSA or 2-part voicings, making it flexible for schools navigating changing voices and uneven vocal maturity across a section.

How to get the most out of it

  • Introduce the Latin section and English section separately, then layer them to show singers how the additive form creates harmonic interest without requiring complex coordination.
  • Let the forte conclusion breathe slightly before the final statement; the buildup works best when singers feel the momentum rather than rush it.
  • If using the recorded accompaniment, rehearse without it first so singers own the melodic line before blending with external sound.

How to use it

Program this early in the school year when you're assessing vocal range and building ensemble cohesion. It also works well in concert contexts where you want to feature developing singers without the pressure of extreme difficulty, or as a confident opener to a program focused on pedagogical repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in parts with intuitive voice leading
  • Sustaining and blending melodic lines in a stackable texture
  • Reading and performing music with Latin text
  • Understanding form through repetition and contrast (additive structure)
  • Managing the transition between text languages (Latin to English)
