About the Composer: Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson brings decades of choral leadership to his work as School Choral Editor for Sing!, the educational publishing division of Choristers Guild. A Dallas native, he directed choral ensembles at Ft. Worth Academy of Fine Arts from 2000 to 2018, where he built programs across multiple choir levels and served as Artistic Director of both the Singing Girls of Texas and the Children's Choir of Texas.

With more than 500 published choral works, vocal solos, and keyboard collections, Johnson has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger deeply invested in music education. Since 2022, he has served as conductor of the Dallas Symphony Children's Chorus Mixed Ensemble (grades 9-12), the resident children's choir for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. His active memberships include the American Choral Directors Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, American Guild of Organists, and ASCAP.

Why we love this

Johnson writes Latin texts with infectious rhythmic energy that engages singers immediately without overwhelming them. The combination of recorded accompaniment, available instrumental parts, and built-in movement and staging options means you can program this with confidence whether you're performing in a concert, festival, or assembly setting. It's the kind of piece that energizes a setlist and leaves audiences smiling.

What to expect

Canta Conmigo pulses with warmth and celebratory energy. The Latin idiom, combined with the recorded accompaniment and opportunity for choreography, creates an immediate sense of joyful community that performers feel from the first rehearsal and audiences receive as pure delight.

Who it's for

This piece works for middle school, high school, and adult choirs seeking accessible Latin repertoire with built-in visual interest. Singers need secure intonation and basic rhythmic independence, but the writing itself is straightforward enough for groups still developing ensemble cohesion.

How to get the most out of it

  • Reference the staging and movement suggestions early in rehearsals so singers internalize the choreography alongside the text and melody.
  • Layer the recorded accompaniment gradually during rehearsals; start with voice parts alone, then add the track once singers are secure with their lines.
  • If using instrumental parts, have those players join rehearsals well before performance so the blend between live instruments and backing track feels cohesive.
  • Check the tempo marking against the recorded accompaniment and lock your conducting to that reference track during final rehearsals.

How to use it

Program this in the second half of a concert to shift the energy and mood, or use it as a closer for a mixed-repertoire show where you want to end on an uplifting, interactive note. It also serves well for school assemblies, cultural celebrations, or festivals where choral artistry and entertainment value carry equal weight.
