About the Composer: Gene Grier

Gene Grier

Gene Grier built a prolific career as a composer whose voice reached across multiple musical genres and audiences. With more than 1,000 published compositions to his name, he worked with major publishers while leading two respected choral music houses, EverGreen Morning Press and Birdsongs Unlimited. His work earned him 29 ASCAP Popular Song Writing Awards, and his children's recordings garnered 11 Grammy nominations in the Children's Music category.

Beyond his publishing success, Grier remained deeply committed to music education and active participation in choral singing. He served as Executive Vice President and General Manager at J.W. Pepper in Detroit and later became an Executive Editor for The Lorenz Corporation, roles that shaped his understanding of what music educators and singers actually need. His background as a touring soloist with The Norman Luboff Choir informed his gift for writing vocal lines that sit naturally in the voice.

Why we love this

Grier's setting of Candleglow captures the warmth and spiritual depth of Chanukah without veering into sentimentality. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility in rehearsal while the music itself rewards singers with straightforward, expressive vocal writing that builds community in the winter concert.

What to expect

Candleglow radiates quiet reverence. The accompaniment creates a gentle harmonic backdrop that lets the choir's voices carry the emotional weight, while the melodic contours suggest both the intimacy of candle lighting and the larger historical resonance of the holiday.

Who it's for

Any choir looking for a meaningful Chanukah selection that serves the season without demanding extended rehearsal time. This works equally well for school choirs seeking sacred repertoire with cultural significance and church choirs deepening their Jewish heritage programming.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the dynamics carefully through the middle sections; the accompaniment track supports the singers but doesn't mask them.
  • Shape the phrases with genuine legit legato rather than mechanical smoothness. This music asks for breath and humanity.
  • Consider bringing out a solo voice or section for textural contrast before returning to full choir for the final statements.

How to use it

Pair this with other winter holiday selections to create a program that honors multiple traditions, or use it as the anchor for a standalone Chanukah concert. The accessible vocal writing makes it suitable for mid-year programming when rehearsal time is limited.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining legit legato lines across longer phrases
  • Singing with cultural awareness and reverence for sacred text
  • Blending and balancing voice parts against recorded accompaniment
  • Phrasing with natural breathing and emotional intention
