More about this title

About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and developed deep roots in choral music through her work as an accompanist at North Texas State University. Her career spans composing and arranging for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice, with mentorship from Dove Award winner Mark Hayes shaping her development as a composer in 2002 and 2004.

Courtney has earned multiple ASCAP Plus Awards throughout her career and maintains an active presence as a church musician, private instructor, and full-time composer. She surpassed 350 published titles by 2017, a trajectory that began with her 100th publication in 2009. She currently resides in Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney writes with an accompanist's ear, which means the piano part sits naturally with SSA/SSAA voicing rather than fighting it. The PianoTrax digital format gives you the flexibility to rehearse independently or print a keyboard score as needed, making this work equally suited to accompanied or a cappella preparation.

What to expect

Warm and reflective, with the kind of lyrical simplicity that draws audiences in without sacrificing harmonic interest. The piece carries the mark of Courtney's church music background, creating something both spiritual in quality and accessible to singers navigating early alto and soprano parts.

Who it's for

Directors programming choral concerts who want accessible, musically substantial repertoire for developing SSA or SSAA ensembles. This works for high school choirs, church choirs, and community groups looking for secular choral literature that doesn't require instrumental forces beyond piano.

How to get the most out of it

  • Adjust the tempo during sectional rehearsals with the accompaniment to isolate voice parts; singers often lock in better when they can hear themselves against the full harmonic context.
  • Balance the piano texture against choir dynamics by having singers mark breath marks during early rehearsals so entrances feel coordinated rather than reactive.
  • Explore the harmonic movement in the accompaniment with your upper voices; Courtney's piano writing often reinforces voice leading, which helps singers internalize their lines.

How to use it

Pair this with other works by Courtney or contemporary arrangers to build a coherent thematic or stylistic set within your concert. The PianoTrax format makes it practical for spring concerts, holiday programs, or benefit performances where you need reliable, flexible accompaniment.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending and balance between soprano and alto sections in three and four-part writing
  • Sustaining lyrical lines while maintaining clarity of text
  • Responding to accompaniment cues and maintaining ensemble cohesion with digital or live piano support
