About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music through three decades as a director of publications at major music publishers, alongside her prolific output of over 600 choral works. Her expertise spans conducting, composition, and movement integration; she has led honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and has been recognized annually by ASCAP since 1987 for her contributions to music.

Educated at Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976) and the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1979; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), Albrecht brings both theatrical sensibility and musical depth to her writing. She has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. A recipient of distinguished alumni awards from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, she continues to collaborate with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse, in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Why we love this

Albrecht and Althouse craft winter songs that feel organic rather than saccharine. This piece carries genuine warmth without resorting to tired sentimentality, making it a refreshing choice for holiday programming that doesn't sacrifice musical integrity. The recorded accompaniment gives smaller choirs the gift of a polished, full sound while singers focus on expression and ensemble blend.

What to expect

Quiet and reflective, this piece captures the stillness of falling snow and the human warmth that contrasts it. The music breathes with simplicity while suggesting emotional depth, creating a moment of genuine connection rather than commercial holiday bustle.

Who it's for

Choirs of mixed ability levels seeking a winter selection that works equally well in educational and community concert settings. This octavo suits ensembles that want recorded accompaniment support without compromising musicality or flexibility in performance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line so lyrics remain clear; winter imagery works best when the story comes through, not the harmony underneath.
  • Experiment with the recorded accompaniment at different tempos during rehearsal to find the version that lets your choir settle into the piece naturally.
  • Layer dynamics carefully through repeated sections to build emotional arc without overselling; restraint makes the ending land harder.
  • Blend vowels across the parts so the choir sounds like one voice reflecting on the season, not four separate lines.

How to use it

Pair this piece with other winter selections to build a thematic set, or place it as a quiet moment late in a longer concert to reset the audience's energy. Its understated nature makes it ideal for the second half of a program, where it can anchor a transition between more energetic pieces.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending vowels across four-part harmony
  • Maintaining legit singing through soft dynamics
  • Shaping phrases around poetic imagery
  • Balancing melody and supporting parts in homophonic writing
  • Responding to piano/recorded accompaniment cues while maintaining independence
