About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings deep practical experience to his work as a composer and arranger. A trained trumpeter who performed with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, he holds degrees in Music Education including a doctorate. Over 600 published works for concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band reflect his command of orchestration across multiple genres.

Bullock spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in secondary schools and later served as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he chaired the Music Education Department for four years. He co-authored the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributed arrangements to Music Expressions, Alfred Music's school curriculum. His clinics and workshops have reached musicians across North America and Europe.

Why we love this

This arrangement respects both the hymn's dignity and the ensemble's current abilities. Grade 1 accessibility never compromises the harmonic substance or emotional weight of Amazing Grace; instead, Bullock's restraint becomes part of what makes it work. Beginning bands sound like musicians playing a real piece, not students reading exercises.

What to expect

Familiar and reverent. The arrangement honors the original tune's simplicity while adding harmonic depth that feels inevitable rather than imposed. Players experience the satisfaction of creating something genuinely moving from their first read.

Who it's for

New band directors seeking a meaningful piece that doesn't require advanced technique. Beginning band musicians and advanced ensembles alike will find this a rewarding performance experience. Programs looking for liturgical or memorial contexts will return to this arrangement year after year.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody with gentle dynamic swells rather than rigid dynamics. The beauty lives in the natural phrasing of the tune itself.
  • Tune the sustained chords carefully during holdovers. Lower voices especially need to lock in with warm, centered tone quality.
  • Balance the melody against accompaniment parts so the hymn tune remains the clear focal point throughout.
  • Allow time for the final resolution to breathe. Resist the urge to rush the last phrase; let silence complete the statement.

How to use it

Place this early in the concert to establish a reflective mood before moving to contrasting material. It works equally well in a service-music context, memorial concert, or holiday program. The eight-page score makes it practical for mid-year programming when other commitments are heavy.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained tone control across whole notes and half notes
  • Phrasing and shaping within a hymn texture
  • Chord balance and harmonic listening
  • Ensemble tuning and intonation awareness
