About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings decades of hands-on experience across performance, composition, and teaching to his arranging work. A accomplished trumpet player who performed with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, he earned undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees in music education and spent 20 years teaching instrumental music in the classroom, including seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music.

With more than 600 published works spanning concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band, Bullock has established himself as a prolific arranger who understands what works in educational settings. He co-authored the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributed arrangements to Music Expressions, Alfred Music's comprehensive school curriculum. His clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and England have shaped music programs across the country.

Why we love this

Bullock's arrangement captures the essential character of this beloved hymn while keeping the technical demands at true Grade 1 level. The conductor score gives you immediate control over tempo and dynamics, letting you shape the piece to match your ensemble's maturity and the emotional arc you want on concert day. This is how Grade 1 string literature should work: musically substantial without requiring advanced technique.

What to expect

There is a quiet dignity in this setting. The familiar melody feels both fresh and timeless, supported by warm harmonic writing that doesn't clutter the line. Even at Grade 1 texture and technique, the arrangement honors the hymn's meditative character.

Who it's for

Beginning string orchestras in middle school or early high school, or adult community ensembles building foundational skills. This arrangement works for conductors introducing young musicians to score reading and dynamic control through repertoire they recognize.

How to get the most out of it

  • Adjust the tempo and dynamic shape during rehearsal to develop ensemble listening. Since the arrangement invites this flexibility, use it to teach young musicians how interpretation serves the music's meaning.
  • Balance the melody across your section leaders. In an arrangement this transparent, an imbalanced line will pull the whole piece off center.
  • Listen for uniform vibrato development across violins. At this level, consistency matters more than technique; straight tone played together sounds better than mixed approaches.

How to use it

This pairs naturally with pops concerts, holiday programs, or community service performances where a moment of reflection strengthens the program's arc. The two-minute length also makes it an ideal opener when you need something that settles the audience and centers the ensemble.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading whole and half notes in first and second positions
  • Responding to conductor cues for tempo and dynamic changes
  • Sustaining long tones with consistent tone quality
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment in transparent textures
  • Interpreting music with expressive intent at a basic level
