Description
This piece contains excellent lessons in baroque articulation and bowing styles. Be sure to instruct your ensemble to play detached sixteenth notes and short martelé quarter notes. The first violin part includes many string crossing sections, which all sit very well under the fingers. The lower parts are quite challenging, and should always be played with a slightly lifted feel (never heavy) to capture the correct continuo style.

About the Arranger: Loreta Fin

Loreta Fin

Loreta Fin brings more than four decades of professional string performance and teaching to her arrangement work. An Australian violinist and violist who trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she has performed in chamber and orchestral settings across multiple continents and served as Principal Viola with the Queensland Pops Orchestra for over 25 years. Her credentials as an educator extend across adjudication at major Australian competitions, presentations at national string teaching conferences in both Australia and the United States, and directorship of strings at Somerville House School in Brisbane since 1993.

Fin's deep knowledge of string pedagogy informs her prolific catalog of over 100 published string orchestra works. She has held leadership roles within the Australian Strings Association, served on the Queensland Symphony Orchestra's education advisory committee, and regularly conducts state and national honours ensembles. Her contributions to music education earned her a National Award for Services to Music and String Teaching, and she currently serves as State Advisor for Strings and examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board.

Why we love this

An arranger who has spent decades training young string musicians knows exactly how to craft engaging baroque material at this level. Fin's arrangement balances authentic stylistic demands (articulation, bowing, continuo texture) with achievable technical challenges, making this a teaching piece that genuinely expands what students can do. The conductor score clearly distinguishes the pedagogical priorities, so you're never guessing what matters most.

What to expect

Buoyant and precise, with the nimbleness of baroque chamber writing scaled for ensemble. The outer voices dance with articulate clarity while the lower parts provide a springy, responsive harmonic foundation that never becomes static. There's a satisfying sense of players navigating technical challenges that feel manageable once they understand the stylistic context.

Who it's for

String orchestras at the upper intermediate level seeking baroque repertoire that teaches authentic period articulation and bowing technique without sacrificing musical substance. This works well for ensembles ready to move beyond standard contemporary arrangements and engage with historical style conventions in a guided, age-appropriate way.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the detached sixteenth notes with clarity and separation, resisting any impulse to blur them together; think of each note as precisely placed rather than rushed.
  • Approach the martelé quarter notes with a slightly lifted bounce to suggest the lightness of continuo writing; the character depends on this distinction from standard quarter note articulation.
  • Guide the lower parts (viola, cello, bass) toward a buoyant, never-heavy tone that supports rather than anchors; this lifted feel is essential to capturing baroque style authentically.
  • Mark the string crossing passages in the first violin part during rehearsal so students understand the ergonomic advantages; sitting well under the fingers builds confidence and allows for secure intonation across the shifts.

How to use it

Program this alongside other baroque or baroque-influenced string pieces to create a coherent stylistic unit on a concert, or use it as a substantial intermediate work in a season that emphasizes string technique development. The 92-page score and parts make it substantial enough for a featured selection rather than filler, and its pedagogical clarity makes it valuable in festivals and adjudication settings where directors want to showcase focused ensemble musicianship.

Skills your students will build

  • String crossings with ergonomic efficiency
  • Lifted, buoyant tone in lower string parts (continuo style)
  • Stylistically informed bowing and phrasing
  • Ensemble balance in baroque harmonic textures
