About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who profoundly shaped music instruction across multiple instruments. Over his career, he composed and published 789 works spanning accordion methods, piano methods, Hammond Chord Organ instruction, guitar methods, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions. His publications reached audiences worldwide through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish.
Palmer's scholarly contributions earned him significant recognition in the field. His expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became foundational to the highly acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological research. Additionally, he served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute.
Palmer's musical journey began early when he performed piano on radio at age 13, studying under Mae Vardeman who cultivated his improvisational talents. He attended Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, continuing his accordion and piano performances throughout his college years. After earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he pursued advanced studies at the Conservatory of Leipzig, Germany on a two-year scholarship. Palmer joined the University of Houston faculty after post-graduate work there, where he taught pioneering college accordion courses for 18 years. He also served as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas for many years and maintained memberships in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, from 1952 to 2016. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who founded Manus Music in 1922 and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. Armed with a business degree from City College of New York and skills as both clarinetist and pianist, Morton joined the family business in the late 1940s.
During his tenure, Morton transformed Alfred Music from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education powerhouse. Beginning in the 1950s, he spearheaded the development of instructional series covering accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. The company's remarkable growth necessitated geographic expansion, leading to the relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and establishment of a distribution center in upstate New York. Major milestones included the 2005 acquisition of Warner Bros. Publications and the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

A graduate of Northwestern University with degrees in piano performance, music education, and performance at the master's level, she studied with renowned musicians including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Her distinguished career includes serving as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintaining a private teaching practice across New York City, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. Dr. Lethco performed recitals throughout the United States and collaborated with Dr. Palmer on the additional publication Creating Music at the Piano.
