About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar who authored 789 published compositions. His prolific output encompasses accordion methods, piano instructional materials, a Hammond Chord Organ method, guitar instruction books, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of these works have been published in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish translations. For an extended period, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical journey began remarkably early; he performed piano on radio broadcasts at age 13. Under the tutelage of Mae Vardeman, he developed strong piano technique while cultivating his improvisational skills. His college years at Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi featured continued performances on radio and in campus ensembles. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, Palmer attended the Conservatory of Leipzig, Germany on a prestigious two-year scholarship and later completed post-graduate studies at the University of Houston.
Palmer gained particular distinction through his scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation, becoming recognized worldwide in this field. He taught the pioneering college accordion courses at the University of Houston for 18 years and directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. His musicological research culminated in the Alfred Masterworks series of publications. The academic community honored his contributions with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. He maintained active memberships in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus led Alfred Music Publishing as president from 1952 to 2016, guiding the company through decades of significant growth and transformation. The company itself traces its roots to 1922, when Morton's father Sam founded Manus Music in New York's Tin Pan Alley as a popular sheet music publisher. Sam later merged his operation with Alfred & Company in 1930, creating the Alfred Music brand that continues today. Morton joined the family business in the late 1940s, fresh from earning his business degree at City College of New York, and eventually took over as president when his father retired.
During the 1950s, Morton reimagined Alfred Music's direction by developing instructional materials for music education. Drawing on his own experience as a clarinetist and pianist, he oversaw the creation of instructional series beginning with accordion, then expanding to guitar, piano, and recorder. This shift established Alfred as an education-focused publisher rather than solely a sheet music house. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most celebrated piano methods, developed alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her Bachelor of Music degrees in Piano Performance and Music Education from Northwestern University, along with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her advanced studies took her to prestigious programs under renowned teachers: James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice across major cities including New York, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston.
