About the Arranger: Jack Zaino

Jack Zaino

Jack Zaino brings New England sensibilities and real classroom experience to his work as a choral arranger and editor at Alfred Music. After teaching middle school music in Connecticut public schools, he earned both a B.A. in Voice and a B.S. in Music Education from the University of Connecticut, followed by a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction from the same institution. He was a founding member of the UConn Chamber Singers and remains active in the Connecticut choral community.

Zaino's arrangement practice centers on finding artistry in contemporary and popular styles, with published work based on music by Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, and Lizzo. Connecticut ACDA recognized him as Young Choral Director of the Year in 2020. He currently serves as composition chair of Connecticut ACDA's repertoire and resources committee and chairs the programming committee for Consonare Choral Community, an organization dedicated to building community through singing.

Why we love this

Zaino captures the narrative sweep of sea songs and maritime traditions without leaning into cuteness or nostalgia. This suite gives SATB choirs genuine storytelling material that sits naturally in the voice while demanding real musicianship. The PartTrax digital download means your singers hear a polished accompaniment that anchors ensemble blend, letting them focus on the emotional arc rather than fighting rhythm section support.

What to expect

Salt air and open water. The suite carries the storytelling weight of maritime ballads while the arrangements keep things moving and alive, never museum-like. You feel both the weight of old traditions and the brightness of skilled modern arranging.

Who it's for

High school choirs and advanced middle school ensembles looking for concert or festival repertoire with immediate appeal and genuine artistic substance. Directors who want students to sing material rooted in folk tradition but arranged with contemporary craft and sophistication will find this suite rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts by listening to how the arranged voices sit against the recorded accompaniment; the digital download lets you rehearse with full orchestration from day one, making blend issues obvious early.
  • Honor the folk roots of the material by resisting over-interpretation; clear diction and steady pulse serve these melodies better than excessive rubato.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment strategically: rehearse sections without it once singers own their parts, so the full arrangement feels like collaborative storytelling rather than singers following along.
  • Shape phrase endings carefully, especially in seagoing narratives where vocal pacing can evoke the rhythm of waves or the sway of a ship; let the text guide your conducting gesture.

How to use it

A seafaring suite works naturally in concert programming as a thematic set that can anchor a show around travel, adventure, or regional heritage. For contest and festival contexts, the distinctive arrangement and strong folk foundation give judges something substantive to hear, and the coherence of a suite makes for stronger program impact than single selections.

Skills your students will build

  • SATB voice independence within folk-based material
  • Singing over recorded accompaniments with ensemble cohesion
  • Text storytelling and narrative pacing across a multi-part suite
  • Intonation in traditional harmonic contexts
