About the Arranger: Jack Zaino

Jack Zaino

Jack Zaino brings a dual perspective to choral music: deep classroom experience and professional expertise in contemporary arranging. After teaching middle school music in Connecticut's public schools, he joined Alfred Music as a choral editor, clinician, and arranger, earning his Master's in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Connecticut while completing degrees in Voice and Music Education from UConn.

Zaino's arrangements showcase his gift for finding artistry in popular styles, with published work featuring artists like Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, and Lizzo. Active in the Connecticut choral community, he was recognized as Young Choral Director of the Year in 2020 by Connecticut ACDA and currently serves as composition chair on their repertoire and resources committee, plus the programming committee for Consonare Choral Community.

Why we love this

Zaino captures the narrative sweep of seafaring traditions without oversimplifying the writing for young voices. The two-part voicing invites genuine part singing rather than unison comfort, while folk material that already resonates with audiences means your ensemble is building repertoire with real staying power for concert and festival settings.

What to expect

Wind and salt spray, storytelling around a fire, the rhythm of work and waves. Zaino's arrangements honor the salt-worn authenticity of folk traditions while keeping young singers engaged with clear part writing and accessible ranges.

Who it's for

Middle school and young high school choirs seeking repertoire that blends traditional appeal with genuine musical substance. This suite works equally well for groups building festival programs or concert pacing, since the seafaring theme provides natural programming coherence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Layer the recorded accompaniment during early rehearsals to establish harmonic context, then gradually reduce reliance so students internalize their own lines.
  • Shape the storytelling arc across all movements; seafaring suites gain momentum when each section builds purposefully toward the next rather than standing alone.
  • Balance the two parts by rotating who sings melody from piece to piece, ensuring both sections develop confidence and ownership.
  • Listen closely to intonation where parts diverge; folk material often exposes tuning issues more readily than homophonic writing.

How to use it

Program this suite as a complete unit on a concert to establish thematic coherence, or space individual movements across different programs if you're building a year-long exploration of cultural traditions. The recorded accompaniment makes it suitable for festival competition without requiring instrumental support.

Skills your students will build

  • Two-part independence and voice leading
  • Folk style interpretation and historically informed phrasing
  • Ensemble balance between melody and supporting harmony
  • Score reading with recorded accompaniment as a learning tool
  • Sustained storytelling across a multi-movement work
