More about this title

About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly spent three decades teaching general music and choir in Nevada's Washoe County School District, bringing classroom experience and pedagogical insight to every piece she writes. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and French from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College, where her coursework centered on integrating the arts across the curriculum.

In 1985, Donnelly and George L. O. Strid began collaborating when their principal challenged them to write a musical for Reading Week. That first project, The Million Dollar Mystery, launched a partnership that has produced over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals. Both are members of ACDA, and their work reflects decades of understanding what students can sing, what audiences enjoy, and what works in real schools.

Why we love this

A Scottish Riddle brings novelty and humor into your concert without sacrificing musical substance. Donnelly and Strid understand choir directors' need for pieces that engage both singers and audiences, and this octavo delivers exactly that through a character-driven narrative that keeps performers invested and listeners entertained.

What to expect

Scottish Riddle captures the playful mystery of a folk puzzle told by someone who delights in the setup as much as the answer. The music has warmth and personality, blending humor with melodic substance in a way that feels both contemporary and rooted in tradition.

Who it's for

Choirs at the middle school level and above will connect with this piece. It works especially well for groups seeking a concert number that's accessible to sing but engaging enough to hold an audience's attention, and it pairs naturally with other secular or novelty selections.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the storytelling. The riddle structure works best when your singers treat the narrative arc seriously, even as they enjoy the whimsy of the text.
  • Shape your dynamic arc carefully through the reveal. Build tension and energy as the riddle unfolds, then land the punchline with confidence.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during early rehearsals to anchor everyone's parts, then gradually reduce dependence on it as confidence grows.

How to use it

Program this as a bright spot in a mixed concert, especially alongside other world music or seasonal selections. It works well as a closer or a strategic audience-engagement piece that breaks up heavier material while still showcasing your singers' musicality.

Skills your students will build

  • Narrative interpretation and character voice in choral singing
  • Rhythmic precision in novelty and folk-style material
  • Dynamic shaping and pacing within a dramatic arc
  • Ensemble blend and balance across lyrical passages
