More about this title

About the Composer: Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows

Mark Burrows combines composition with active conducting and teaching across all age levels. His published works appear on state and festival lists nationwide, and he fields multiple commissions annually from children's ensembles through adult and intergenerational groups.

Burrows holds a music education degree from Southern Methodist University and completed graduate studies in conducting at Texas Christian University. He currently serves as Director of Children's Ministries at FUMC in Fort Worth, where he lives with his family.

Why we love this

Burrows writes with genuine warmth for choral voices, crafting melodies that singers want to live inside. The pairing of peace and brotherhood themes with winter and Christmas contexts gives you flexible programming options throughout the season, whether you're building a faith-centered service or a secular community concert.

What to expect

Warmth without sentimentality. The music carries genuine optimism about hope and peace while remaining accessible to singers at all levels. Listeners sense sincerity in the message and permission to sit with both longing and comfort.

Who it's for

This octavo speaks to choirs seeking repertoire that honors the spiritual and humanistic dimensions of winter and Christmas without requiring complex vocal writing. It works equally well for church choirs marking the season and for school and community ensembles programming peace-centered concerts.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance transparency in the accompaniment with choral clarity; the recorded accompaniment sits back to support rather than carry the sound, so encourage singers to project without force.
  • Shape phrases toward their text rather than toward structural downbeats; let the meaning of "peace" and "hope" guide the arc of each musical idea.
  • Consider the recorded accompaniment as a rehearsal tool first, then as a performance option; learning with it helps unify rhythmic and harmonic foundations quickly.

How to use it

Pair this with other Burrows pieces or with contrasting arrangements of familiar carols to build a thematic winter concert. Its moderate technical demands make it an ideal anchor for a program that includes simpler congregational singing or more demanding contemporary works.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing text with spiritual and social meaning without didacticism
  • Balancing individual voice parts within ensemble texture
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment for rhythmic and harmonic accuracy
