About the Author: John Kinyon

John Kinyon

John Kinyon earned degrees from Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music, followed by an honorary doctorate from Limestone College in South Carolina. He directed instrumental music programs and served as music department head in several school districts, held the position of educational director for Warner Brothers Music in New York, and taught music education at the University of Miami before transitioning to semi-retirement in Tuckasegee in 1982.

Kinyon has composed more than 250 educational works published through Alfred, establishing himself as a prolific voice in school music repertoire. His catalog spans Grade 1 through Grade 3 difficulty levels across marches, ballads, overtures, and other forms, reflecting a commitment to writing music that meets students where they are.

Why we love this

These duets anchor themselves directly to the Yamaha Individual Instruction Series, which means every arrangement lands precisely at the proficiency level your students have reached in their method book. You get 20 pieces per instrument that feel purposeful rather than generic—designed with flute pedagogy in mind rather than adapted from piano or violin parts.

What to expect

These duets have the ease and accessibility of well-crafted beginner repertoire without sacrificing musicality. The writing feels purposeful and structured, moving students forward technically while keeping them engaged with material that sounds finished and musical rather than overly simplified.

Who it's for

Beginning flute students working through the Yamaha Individual Instruction Series will find these duets aligned directly with their technical progress. Band directors and private flute teachers use these pieces to build ensemble skills, intonation listening, and confidence in students who are still in their first year or two of study.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts so both voices remain audible; the primo flute can easily overshadow the secondo, so encourage the first flute player to listen actively and pull back dynamically when necessary.
  • Practice independently before playing together; having each student secure their own part first prevents the rehearsal from becoming a struggle-through-together session.
  • Use these duets for peer learning by pairing an advanced student with a beginner on the same piece, allowing the experienced player to model phrasing and tone quality.
  • Rotate parts between students so they experience both the primo and secondo voices; playing different parts strengthens musicality and builds flexibility.

How to use it

Use these in studio lessons to develop duet literacy early; students who learn to read a second part while maintaining their own part develop stronger sight-reading independence. They also work well in ensemble settings as an alternative to full-band warm-ups, allowing flutes to rehearse together while building confidence in a low-stakes duet context. Several are Federation Festivals selections, making them natural choices for contest preparation or recital programming.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and balancing a second melodic line while maintaining accurate rhythm
  • Listening for intonation between two parts in real time
  • Matching tone quality and vibrato with a peer
  • Phrase shaping and musical expression with a partner
  • Maintaining steady tempo against another flutist
