More about this title

About the Author: Jaime Babbitt

Jaime Babbitt

Jaime Babbitt began her professional singing career at 15 and has since worked across multiple genres and contexts: session work in New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville; touring with Leon Russell as a backup vocalist and percussionist; live and recorded collaborations with artists ranging from George Strait to Miley Cyrus; and hundreds of commercial jingles for major brands. Her versatility earned her roles in Disney Records projects and other high-profile recording work.

Beyond her performing career, Babbitt has taught vocal technique, studio performance, and stage craft both for Disney Records in Los Angeles and through private instruction in Nashville and Los Angeles. She holds a degree from Columbia University in English and writing, bringing both artistic depth and clear communication to her teaching philosophy.

Why we love this

This is written by someone who has actually lived the working singer's life across commercial, session, and performance contexts, not by a theorist observing from the sidelines. Rather than generic advice, you get candid answers about gigs, marketing, technique, and the daily reality of sustaining a singing career across multiple genres. It's the kind of book singers keep returning to because the guidance applies whether you're chasing session work, performing live, or building your own projects.

What to expect

Practical and grounded, stripped of romantic illusions about the singer's life. Babbitt writes from experience rather than inspiration, offering concrete perspectives on technique, business, and persistence that feel like mentoring from someone who has navigated the exact challenges her readers face.

Who it's for

Singers serious about building careers in commercial music, session work, live performance, or any context where singing generates income. This serves both emerging singers beginning professional work and established performers looking to sustain or expand their careers. It's equally valuable for high school and college singers exploring whether professional singing aligns with their goals.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build your connections deliberately and maintain them consistently; the people you work with become your network, and that network sustains a career far more reliably than talent alone
  • Treat your body as a professional asset by developing vocal technique through proper study, not just natural ability, so you can deliver across multiple takes, styles, and performance conditions
  • Approach marketing and self-promotion with the same professionalism you bring to your singing; many talented singers plateau because they underestimate the business side of a music career
  • Cultivate adaptability across genres and contexts rather than limiting yourself to one style; versatility directly increases your working opportunities and income potential

How to use it

Assign this to your serious vocal students as summer or winter break reading. It complements technical voice study by addressing the professional context in which technique actually gets used. Pair it with repertoire study and performance opportunities throughout the year so students can test the book's advice in real time.

Skills your students will build

  • Vocal technique development tailored to professional demands
  • Business and marketing strategy for singers
  • Audition and performance preparation
  • Networking and professional relationship building
  • Adaptability across multiple vocal genres and contexts
  • Sustainable practice and career longevity strategies
