Demarest's creative output draws richly from her extensive travels throughout Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean alongside her husband Steve. Active in the Society of Colorado Composers, the National Music Teachers Association, and the Colorado State Music Teachers Association, she has performed recitals at venues in Sweden, Canada, Australia, and Denmark. In addition to her work as a pianist and composer, Demarest is also a published poet.

Why we love this

Demarest captures the humor and visual charm of Halloween with a character-driven piece that respects young pianists' growing technical abilities. The piece entertains while building genuine musicianship, making it an ideal fall recital selection or Halloween-themed lesson that students actually look forward to playing.

What to expect

A playful, slightly creaky journey with a mischievous spirit. The music feels imperfect on purpose, with wobbles and quirks that make the old witch endearingly clumsy alongside her faithful feline companion.

Who it's for

Early intermediate pianists ready to explore character pieces that demand musical storytelling alongside technical growth. This piece works especially well for students who respond to descriptive or programmatic music and enjoy Halloween-themed performance opportunities.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady tempo that lets the wobbly character come through without rushing; the humor lands when listeners can clearly hear what the music is depicting.
  • Shape the phrases to suggest the witch's movements and personality; exaggerate the weight and awkwardness where the notation suggests it.
  • Listen carefully to hand position and finger independence so that any character moments (stumbles, quirks) sound intentional rather than accidental.

How to use it

Program this during a fall recital, Halloween party, or seasonal lesson series where younger and intermediate students perform together. It pairs naturally with other character pieces or lighter repertoire in a diverse program, and its short length (4 pages) makes it ideal for positioning between weightier selections.

Skills your students will build

  • Character interpretation and musical storytelling at the piano
  • Coordination of hands in contrasting rhythmic patterns
  • Tempo control and the musical use of articulation for descriptive effect
  • Phrasing and expression in a programmatic context
