More about this title

About the Composer: Marti Lunn Lantz

Marti Lunn Lantz

Marti Lunn Lantz grew up in Akron, Ohio, where she began composing as a child and had her first choral work published while still in high school. A piano performance graduate of the University of Akron, she sang with the university jazz band and later performed with Fred Waring and The Pennsylvanians, experiences that shaped her distinctive compositional voice.

Lantz has composed across multiple genres, including country songs and film scores, and frequently collaborates with her husband David Lantz III on choral works for school and church ensembles. Based in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, she remains active as a keyboardist, vocalist, organist, handbell director, and piano teacher. Her work has earned multiple ASCAP awards and she holds affiliations with ASCAP and the National Music Federation.

Why we love this

Lantz writes with the ear of someone who understands both popular song and choral warmth, and this piece delivers accessible, singable voicing that doesn't sacrifice musicality. The recorded accompaniment gives you flexibility to rehearse independently while maintaining secure intonation and style, especially valuable for groups building confidence with seasonal repertoire.

What to expect

Inviting and reflective, with the kind of melodic sincerity that makes audiences lean in. The accompaniment provides harmonic depth while the text creates intimacy, evoking the quiet comfort of homecoming during the cold season.

Who it's for

Any choir seeking an accessible winter secular piece that sits comfortably for mixed voices and connects emotionally without demanding advanced technique. Works equally well for school choirs, community groups, and church ensembles adding seasonal color to a concert or service.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the vocal parts against the accompaniment by rehearsing the melody and inner voices separately first; the SoundTrax recording will anchor everyone when you bring the full piece together.
  • Shape the phrases with natural breath points rather than strict bar lines; listen to where the accompaniment creates gentle peaks and valleys.
  • Keep the tone warm and resonant without heaviness; this piece benefits from a choir that sings with openness and gentle forward motion.

How to use it

Open a winter concert with this piece to set a reflective tone, or pair it with more energetic seasonal works to create programming variety. It also works as a standalone piece for holiday services or winter festivals where you want something contemporary and genuine rather than traditional.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained phrases with consistent tone quality across dynamic ranges
  • Blending mixed voice parts while maintaining individual part security
  • Responding to accompaniment cues and maintaining ensemble unity with recorded backing
