About the Composer: Anthony Giamanco

Anthony Giamanco

Anthony Giamanco studied composition at Eastern Michigan University, where he worked with mentors including Dady Mehta, Mary Ida Yost, Ernest Brandon, and Anthony Iannaconne. His choral, piano, organ, and chamber works are published by Alfred Music, Lorenz, Laudation Music, GIA, Augsburg Fortress, and Shawnee Press.

Giamanco has served as Director of Creative Arts and Worship at Shalom Lutheran Church in Pinckney, Michigan, and resides in South Lyon, Michigan. His deep roots in both liturgical and concert music traditions inform his compositions for singers of all levels.

Why we love this

Giamanco brings a lyricist's sensibility to his choral writing. Winter pairs poetic text with accessible SATB writing that lets the literary content shine without demanding technical gymnastics, making it equally effective in a concert setting or a festival competition.

What to expect

Winter captures the season's contemplative mood through harmonic color and text painting. The piece unfolds with the quiet dignity of frost and bare branches, inviting singers to inhabit the poetic mood rather than merely sing the notes.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits intermediate to advanced SATB choirs preparing for concerts or festivals. The piece works for high school, college, and community ensembles seeking secular repertoire with literary substance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the text clarity across all four voice parts; the poetic language carries weight only when every syllable lands with intention.
  • Explore the dynamic range within sections before locking tempos. Winter likely rewards subtle shifts in volume that mirror seasonal imagery.
  • Use the PianoTrax accompaniment to establish the harmonic and emotional foundation, then gradually reduce dependency on it during rehearsal so voices can grow more confident and independent.

How to use it

Position Winter as a concert centerpiece or festival selection that provides contrast to lighter, faster material. Its seasonal text makes it a natural fit for winter concerts or programs exploring nature through choral literature.
