Description

Whispers is a melody. Fragments of melody, fragile, intimate, and expressive, are mostly played sempre molto flautando, either at sul tasto extreme or at sul pont. The solo explores quiet timbral nuances, mostly at the top of the lower strings.

Silence is the canvas - all threads of sound surface out of, and disappear into, silence. Imagine each fragment is framed in silence. The silences should be carefully weighed - they are never static and always in motion.

There are five sections.

A palette of timbres explores specific modes of vibrato, articulation, timbre, and dynamic. Every detail is important! - carefully trace and shape each fragment, exploring exact timbral nuance, differentiation, and extremes. Please note at mp the sound opens, is no longer so intimate and should be projected to the very back of the hall.

There are no time signatures. The graphics of the score shows the proportions of durations. Tempo 50 is the initial central tempo, but it is only a guideline. The basic pulse should vary from section to section. Minimum tempo can be circa 40. Further faster tempi are necessary moving on to reinforce the phrasing of the gestures. Explore the melodies to find your own tempo and interpretation. Keep the pulse always in motion, never stagnant - timeless, but avoid always avoid melancholy.

More about this title

About the Composer: Rebecca Saunders

Rebecca Saunders is a German composer known for her meticulous attention to timbre, silence, and the expressive potential of extended instrumental techniques. Her works, often spare and introspective, demand intense focus from performers and listeners alike. She has received commissions from major ensembles and festivals worldwide and continues to compose and teach, bringing a sculptor's precision to every note.

Why we love this

Whispers offers violinists a rare opportunity to explore the instrument's full spectrum of timbral possibilities within a single, cohesive work. Rather than relying on technical display, it challenges players to shape silence as carefully as sound, making it an ideal recital choice for musicians ready to move beyond conventional repertoire and into genuine artistic interpretation.

What to expect

Whispers unfolds like fragments of overheard conversation, each phrase emerging delicately from silence and dissolving back into it. The palette shifts between intimate, gossamer textures and moments of unexpected openness, creating an atmosphere that is contemplative yet alive, never settling into sadness but instead hovering in a state of careful listening.

Who it's for

Intermediate to advanced violinists seeking contemporary solo repertoire that values subtlety and timbral awareness over virtuosic display. This work suits recitalists comfortable with unconventional notation and willing to engage deeply with extended techniques such as sul tasto, sul ponticello, and varied vibrato control.

How to get the most out of it

  • Treat silence as active material, not simply absence. Each rest should feel intentional and weighted, creating a sense of perpetual motion within apparent stillness.
  • Experiment with the tempo guidelines across sections. Begin with the initial tempo of 50 as a reference point, but allow the pulse to breathe and shift as each gesture demands. Listen for the natural phrasing of the melody itself.
  • Pay close attention to the distinction between intimate (mp and softer) and projected (at mp and above) passages. The timbral character changes dramatically; what is fragile at ppp must open and carry across the hall at mp.
  • Study the graphic notation carefully to understand proportional relationships between durations. Without traditional time signatures, visual spacing on the page becomes your rhythmic guide.

How to use it

Program Whispers as a centerpiece in a recital focused on contemporary solo string music, or pair it with other works exploring extended techniques and graphic notation. Its introspective quality makes it especially effective as a transition piece between larger works, or as the opening statement of a concert designed to establish a more experimental aesthetic.

Skills your students will build

  • Control of sul tasto and sul ponticello techniques with precise tonal distinction
  • Interpretation of graphic notation and proportional rhythm without traditional time signatures
  • Differentiation of vibrato types and dynamic nuance at soft dynamic levels
  • Shaping and weighting of silence as compositional material
  • Tempo flexibility and independence from metronomic pulse
  • Projection and timbral adjustment at medium dynamics and above
