Douglas E. Wagner studied music at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees before spending three decades as a high school music director and administrator in his native Chicago. Since 1973, he has become one of the most prolific composers in American music education, with over 3,500 published works spanning concert band, orchestra, choir, handbell ensemble, and keyboard music. His compositions have reached audiences across the country and internationally through concert hall performances, broadcasts, and educational recordings, with cumulative sales exceeding seventeen million copies.

Wagner's deep background in secondary music education directly informs his compositional voice. He understands what students need to play and what directors need to teach, which explains why his music has become a staple in programs at every level. He now resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy, and continues writing music full-time.
