About the Composer: Michael Souders

Michael Souders teaches elementary music at Colonial Heights Public Schools in Virginia and has become one of Alfred Music's most prolific choral composers. His "Positive American Music" brand has reached millions through his YouTube channel (msouders37), which showcases over 4.5 million views and a dedicated subscriber base. A James Madison University graduate with a degree in Music and Worship, Souders studied arranging and composition with Robert W. Smith and performed as a pianist, jazz ensemble member, and trumpet soloist during his college years.
Since entering the classroom in 2005, Souders has built his compositional practice around the real needs of his students and colleagues. His catalog includes the widely performed "Thank You, Soldiers," and his work consistently reflects his deep understanding of what singers can accomplish and what teachers need. Directors recognize his music for its accessibility, emotional authenticity, and immediate relevance to student and audience lives.
Why we love this
Souders writes from a teacher's perspective, which means every phrase sits naturally for choir singers and every emotional beat lands without manipulation. The text and melody work together to create genuine impact rather than artifice, making this a song your singers will actually connect with rather than perform through. For graduation or any moment requiring both dignity and warmth, this octavo delivers without relying on cliché.
What to expect
A warm hand extended in genuine solidarity. The music moves with quiet conviction, never rushing or overstating, and the harmonic language supports vulnerability without sentimentality. Singers feel the weight of compassion they're expressing, and listeners experience the comfort of being seen and held.
Who it's for
Choirs preparing for graduation ceremonies, memorial services, or occasions calling for an anthem of human connection and mutual support. The piece works equally well for high school or college ensembles and suits both secular and faith-based performance contexts.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the opening phrase with intention; this ballad thrives when singers understand that "I'll be there" is a promise, not a casual statement.
- Balance the SATB texture so that the melody remains the focal point while inner voices provide harmonic support. A recorded accompaniment can help establish this balance during rehearsal.
- Allow rubato in the emotional peaks, but return to a steady pulse during refrain sections to anchor the piece's message of solid, reliable support.
- Invest time in text clarity; the emotional power depends entirely on the audience hearing and believing the words.
How to use it
Pair this with lighter or more celebratory pieces at graduation to anchor the ceremony emotionally and remind students of their responsibility to each other beyond the event itself. The eight-page format makes it substantial enough to stand alone as a concert focal point, yet concise enough to program alongside other selections.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining emotional legit through long phrases while maintaining vocal health
- Balancing ensemble blend in block harmony
- Singing with textual intention and conveying specific emotional content
