About the Composer: Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan

Gary Fagan is a composer and arranger based in Maryland whose work has reached audiences at major venues including the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the White House, and Virginia's gubernatorial inauguration. He earned degrees in Music Education from Bridgewater College and in a graduate program from James Madison University, then spent 36 years directing bands in Albemarle County public schools. His contributions to music education have been recognized with awards from the Virginia Governor's School for the Visual and Performing Arts and the Piedmont Council of the Arts, and he appears twice in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers."

Since retiring from full-time teaching, Fagan has remained deeply active in the field as a university supervisor and adjunct faculty member at JMU, teaching arranging and mentoring the next generation of music educators. He serves as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the region, maintains an active composing and arranging practice for band and string orchestra, and performs as a percussionist and assistant director with the Charlottesville Band. He holds memberships in ASCAP, the National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, and remains engaged with MENC and the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association.

Why we love this

This score carries genuine weight without overwhelming a Grade 2 ensemble. Fagan writes with clear respect for the occasion and the young musicians performing it, crafting music that is accessible yet emotionally honest. Directors will appreciate how the piece balances memorial solemnity with achievable orchestration, making it genuinely singable for a mid-level band.

What to expect

The music unfolds with quiet dignity, grounded in clear harmonies and unhurried phrasing. There is strength in restraint here; Fagan's orchestration creates moments of subtle power rather than bombast, allowing space for reflection and remembrance.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 2 level, whether in schools, youth symphonies, or community ensembles, will find this work both playable and deeply meaningful. Directors seeking repertoire that honors significant occasions while remaining within the technical reach of developing musicians will connect with this piece.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic line with careful attention to phrase length. Allow the music to breathe at natural points rather than pressing relentlessly forward.
  • Balance soloists and section players so that the primary theme remains audible without solo features overwhelming the ensemble sound.
  • Approach dynamic changes gradually. Fagan's dynamic markings serve the emotional arc, so resist the urge to jump between levels abruptly.
  • Pay particular attention to intonation in slower passages where harmonic color matters most. A brief tuning check before performance pays dividends here.

How to use it

Consider this piece as an opening number for a concert devoted to community themes or service. It also pairs naturally with other reflective works in a program, where its three-minute-forty-five-second duration provides a meaningful full-ensemble statement without requiring extended stage time.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained legato playing across phrase lengths
  • Blend and balance within homophonic textures
  • Sensitivity to dynamic shaping in quiet passages
  • Intonation and tuning awareness in slow tempos
