After spending 36 years leading bands in Albemarle County, he transitioned into higher education, where he supervises student teachers and teaches arranging at James Madison University while maintaining his own active schedule as a clinician, adjudicator, and percussionist.

Fagan's work in music education has earned him recognition as a Central Virginia Outstanding Middle School Teacher and multiple Outstanding Educator Awards from state and regional arts organizations. His involvement in national organizations including MENC, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, and the National Band Association reflects his commitment to the broader music education community. As a composer and arranger for band and string orchestra, he continues to create music that serves both educational and commemorative purposes.
