We Will Remember: Concert Band Conductor Score

Fagan approaches this memorial with musical restraint and genuine solemnity rather than sentimentality, allowing the Grade 2 instrumentation to convey dignity without requiring technical virtuosity from your ensemble. The piece honors a specific historical moment while remaining universally relevant to any band's desire to program meaningful concert music. At just under four minutes, it fits naturally into commemorative concerts, special assemblies, or regular programming where you want to create space for reflection.

We Will Remember unfolds with quiet nobility. The orchestration respects silence as much as sound, creating moments of stillness that ask listeners to bring their own reflection to the music rather than dictating emotion. The piece feels like a ceremony led with care by someone who understands both loss and the resilience of community.

This score is written for conductors leading Grade 2 concert bands who want to program repertoire with emotional and historical substance. It works equally well for directors seeking meaningful music for spring concerts, memorial services, or festival performances where your ensemble's musical maturity and the community's receptiveness support sincere, contemplative material.

• Shape the melodic line with careful attention to phrase length; let the harmonic progression carry the emotional weight rather than pushing the tempo.
• Balance the band so that the primary voice emerges clearly without drowning accompanying voices. Grade 2 scoring often relies on distributed weight, not solo prominence.
• Consider the acoustics of your performance space. A piece of this character benefits from allowing sound to settle and resonate rather than driving forward with excessive tempo or volume.

This memorial work anchors a concert when placed thoughtfully alongside other repertoire. Consider programming it as a standalone moment of reflection, perhaps following a rousing opener and before lighter fare, or as the concluding piece of a concert devoted to significant themes. Its modest instrumentation and accessible level make it feasible for bands at multiple ability stages, and its substance makes it suitable for both public performances and in-school commemorative events.

• Sustaining long phrases with controlled breath and tone
• Balancing harmonic color across full band instrumentation
• Playing with expressive restraint and emotional maturity
• Responding to subtle conducting gestures that shape rubato and phrasing
