About the Arranger: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse studied music education and music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni award. Early in his career, he worked in rights and licensing for a major educational music publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. His compositional output spans over 800 choral works performed worldwide across all ability levels.

Beyond composition, Althouse has shaped music education through multiple channels. He has co-written children's musicals with Sally K. Albrecht, curated and arranged vocal solo collections, and authored or co-authored several classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book, Accent on Composers, and reproducible materials for music theory and music history instruction. As a writer member of ASCAP, he is a consistent recipient of the ASCAP Special Award. He served on the board of the North Carolina Master Chorale and currently advises the National Advisory Board of the Folk Art Society of America.

Why we love this

Althouse crafts arrangements that honor the carol's essence while creating something genuinely fresh. The harmonies sit naturally in school and church choir ranges, and the dramatic arc toward a majestic finish gives singers real moments to sink their teeth into without requiring advanced technique.

What to expect

Majestic and ceremonial, with undercurrents of warmth. The arrangement moves from lyrical openness into increasingly rich harmonic territory, building toward a finish that feels genuinely triumphant without straining the ensemble.

Who it's for

School and church choirs looking for a Christmas piece that respects the carol's tradition while delivering a performance moment worth rehearsing. The arrangement works well for intermediate to advanced choirs with basic four-part balance and clear diction.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the recorded accompaniment against your choir's blend during early rehearsals; you'll want the rhythm section support clear without overwhelming the voices.
  • Shape the harmonies through dynamic contrast rather than tempo shifts. Let the richer voicing in later phrases feel fuller and more expansive naturally.
  • Work the final dramatic push in sectionals first. Althouse builds intensity through harmonic movement, so getting the soprano and alto lines secure in the climax pays dividends in full choir.

How to use it

Program this as a concert centerpiece or finale if you want a strong closing carol that stands apart from simpler holiday fare. It pairs well alongside more traditional arrangements or unaccompanied pieces, giving your Christmas concert architectural shape and allowing singers to stretch into expressive singing.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing sustained harmony in four parts with clear voice independence
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment and maintaining blend with instrumental support
  • Executing dynamic shaping across phrases to build musical tension and release
  • Articulating text clearly while managing harmonic complexity
