About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 works for singers of all ages, from children's musicals to advanced choral literature. His compositions are performed internationally, and he maintains an active career as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for honor choirs and all-state ensembles throughout the United States. Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond his publishing role, Beck is an accomplished tenor who performs regularly with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and directs musical theatre. His pedagogical resources, including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, reflect his deep commitment to music literacy and choral artistry at every level.

Why we love this

Beck captures the aspirational spirit of O'Shaughnessy's poem with music that genuinely soars rather than merely gestures toward inspiration. The SAB voicing sits comfortably across a mixed ensemble without sacrificing harmonic richness, and the piano accompaniment is sophisticated enough to engage your accompanist while remaining accessible. This works equally well opening a concert or competing at festival because the piece has genuine substance beneath its approachable surface.

What to expect

The majestic opening immediately establishes a sense of purpose and grandeur, drawing listeners in with confident brass-like choral scoring. The heart of the piece unfolds with soaring, lyrical lines that feel both intimate and expansive, supported by the warmth of a full piano part. The return to the fanfare closing provides a satisfying bookend that leaves the audience energized and reflective.

Who it's for

Treble-heavy ensembles and mixed choirs with developing sight-reading skills will succeed with this piece. It works for high school, community college, and adult choirs seeking contemporary repertoire with mainstream appeal for both performers and audiences.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the fanfare bookends so they frame the piece without overwhelming the middle section; the opening should feel proclamatory but not aggressive, and the closing should leave the audience in reflection rather than simply loud.
  • Emphasize the text clarity in the lyrical center. O'Shaughnessy's language is poetic and deserves thoughtful diction; mark consonants precisely so the words land without sacrificing legit tone.
  • Shape the melodic lines through phrase arcs rather than note-by-note dynamics. Beck's writing rewards singers who think in long lines, especially in the inner voices where the harmonic color develops.
  • Rehearse the SAB transitions carefully. Three-part mixed writing asks each voice to balance its own line while contributing to the whole; sectional work early prevents the piece from sounding sparse.

How to use it

Open your concert with this piece. Its musical and textual substance engages an audience immediately while the approachable voicing allows your ensemble to settle into performance confidently. It pairs naturally with both classical works and contemporary pop arrangements, giving you flexibility in building a compelling program flow.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in three-part mixed voicing with balanced blend and independent line awareness
  • Phrasing longer lyrical passages with dynamic control and legit tone production
  • Text interpretation and diction in contemporary American choral works
  • Listening for harmonic balance in close voicing while maintaining individual vocal line clarity
  • Following and responding to piano accompaniment cues
