About the Composer: JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall grew up in Texas and earned degrees in music education from the University of North Texas and Texas State University, studying composition with Dr. Michael Ippolito and Dr. Jack Wilds, and conducting under Dr. Nicholas Williams and Dr. Caroline Beatty. As both a performer and educator, he has spent eight years leading concert bands, earning consistent sweepstakes recognition at state evaluations and guiding his middle school program to historic achievements, including a Citation of Excellence in 2018.

Hall performs on tuba and trombone and has worked with some of the region's most respected ensembles, including the North Texas Wind Symphony, the 3 O'Clock Lab Band, and the Texas State Wind Symphony, where he served as principal tuba. His compositions have earned recognition on the Texas Prescribed Music List, the J.W. Pepper "Editor's Choice" list, and the Bandworld Top 100, with works like "Through the Storm" winning the 2021 Barbara Buehlman Prize for middle school band.

Why we love this

Hall's gift for blending familiar holiday melodies with contemporary grooves makes this medley genuinely engaging for modern band students. The Grade 3 level keeps the writing accessible without sacrificing the funk, gospel, and ballad textures that give the piece real character, and your band will sound polished and spirited from the first rehearsal.

What to expect

You're walking through a neighborhood at dusk where every house celebrates Christmas differently. The piece grooves with infectious energy one moment, pulls you into a soulful reflection the next, then lands you in a moment of quiet reverence. It's celebratory without being saccharine, contemporary without losing sight of what makes these carols timeless.

Who it's for

Grade 3 concert bands seeking a holiday program piece that connects with contemporary student sensibilities. Directors looking for a medley that avoids cliché arrangements will find Hall's integration of funk, gospel, and hip-hop textures refreshing, and audiences consistently respond to the familiar tunes wrapped in fresh sonic energy.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythm section on the funk and hip-hop sections early; the pocket matters more than perfection, so prioritize a confident, consistent groove in rehearsals.
  • Shape the gospel passages with dynamic contrast and longer phrase breathing to let the soulful character emerge naturally rather than rushing through sentiment.
  • Balance the medley structure by giving each holiday tune its own distinct color; rehearse transitions as carefully as the melodies themselves so the journey feels intentional.
  • Use the ballad section ("O Holy Night") as an opportunity to refine ensemble tone and intonation; slower tempos expose everything, so invest rehearsal time here.

How to use it

Program this as the centerpiece of a winter concert or holiday show, where it can stand alone or anchor a set alongside more traditional arrangements. Its runtime of just over five minutes makes it ideal for filling a substantial slot without dominating a full concert, and the recognizable melodies make it perfect for family audiences or community performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Funk and hip-hop rhythmic feel, including syncopation and pocket playing
  • Gospel-influenced phrasing and dynamic shaping
  • Transitioning smoothly between stylistic sections and medley structure
  • Balancing contemporary grooves with ballad sensitivity and tone quality
