More about this title

About the Composer: Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin studied composition at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, building on an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His catalog now includes over two hundred anthems and seven choral musicals, written from a unique vantage point that spans church music direction, theme park entertainment, and work across multiple genres from rock to bluegrass to classical.

Choplin serves as Minister of Music at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, where many of his pieces originate from immediate liturgical needs. He conducts and performs his own work throughout the country as composer, clinician, and entertainer, drawing audiences into laughter and reflection through music that balances humor with spiritual depth. His recordings include the self-produced "Pepper Is My Real Name" and the inspirational solo album "Hold On," both showcasing his gift for writing music that moves people to genuine worship.

Why we love this

Choplin's harmonic language feels fresh without alienating singers or audiences. The spiritual style grounds the piece in familiar territory, but the rhythmic and melodic surprises prevent it from settling into predictability. This is the kind of piece that builds genuine community engagement around a message worth singing.

What to expect

There's warmth and accessibility here, wrapped around a message about empathy and understanding. The spiritual style invites singers and listeners into something both contemporary and timeless, with musical moments that surprise and delight.

Who it's for

This piece works for intermediate to advanced TTBB choirs with strong ear training and blend. It suits church choirs, collegiate men's groups, and community ensembles that can handle the harmonic sophistication and want repertoire with a socially conscious text.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the four voice parts carefully during the harmonic twists; the interesting chords will blur if any voice recedes too far into the texture.
  • Let the rhythmic patterns breathe naturally rather than over-conducting them; a cappella singing benefits from a conductor who shapes the phrasing rather than driving every beat.
  • Rehearse the piece by sections first to lock the harmonies, then work toward full-choir runs to develop the sense of ensemble blend that makes spiritual-style writing resonate.

How to use it

Pair this with other socially conscious choral writing to create a thoughtful concert theme, or use it as a powerful closing piece for a service or program focused on compassion and community. Its a cappella format makes it flexible for both concert and worship settings.
