About the Composer: Robert Sheldon

Robert Sheldon

Robert Sheldon's compositions for wind band appear on contest lists and concert stages worldwide. His accolades from the American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu, and ASCAP reflect the expressive quality that connects ensembles to audiences. He co-authored Sound Innovations for Concert Band and continues to produce new works annually while maintaining an active schedule as guest conductor for honor bands and clinician at universities and state conferences.

Sheldon has conducted his own music from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, working with ensembles across the United States, Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Australia, and China. In 2020, VanderCook College of Music awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his sustained contributions to wind band music.

Why we love this

Sheldon captures the essence of travel through modal melody and propulsive rhythm without sacrificing the straightforward accessibility that Grade 1.5 demands. The integration of PerformancePlus+ resources transforms rehearsal from static note-reading into guided skill development, giving conductors concrete tools to build musicianship around a genuinely engaging score.

What to expect

Voyages evokes the sensory experience of stepping into unfamiliar terrain, moody and modal in its melodic voice while propelled forward by rhythmic vitality that mirrors the energy of exploration. The piece balances atmospheric reflection with driving momentum, creating a journey that listeners follow from departure through discovery.

Who it's for

This score and parts set serves conductors leading Grade 1.5 concert bands who want engaging, programmatic literature with built-in educational scaffolding. It works equally well for contest preparation and concert programs because the musical content and PerformancePlus+ resources support both performance excellence and skill building.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the modal melodic content against the driving percussion foundation. The rhythmic layers should propel the piece forward without overwhelming the atmospheric quality of the harmony.
  • Use the assignment and assessment tools in MakeMusic Cloud to isolate technical challenges before full ensemble rehearsals, allowing students to arrive prepared.
  • Shape the mood through dynamic control. Sheldon's instrumentation supports considerable nuance even at this grade level; resist playing uniformly and instead follow the emotional arc of the travel narrative.
  • Coordinate percussion entrances with precision. The driving rhythms are central to the piece's character, so clarity and ensemble unity in that section elevates the entire performance.

How to use it

Program Voyages as a concert opener to establish mood and energy, or place it alongside contrasting styles to showcase your band's dynamic range. Its contest-ready structure and accessible grade level make it ideal for festivals and competitions, while the programmatic content gives audiences a narrative anchor that enhances concert engagement.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing modal melodies with stylistic sensitivity
  • Balancing thematic content with rhythmic accompaniment textures
  • Ensemble clarity in layered percussion parts
  • Dynamic shaping and phrasing across the form
  • Using cloud-based practice and assessment tools to refine individual and ensemble technique
