About the Arranger: Chuck Bridwell

Chuck Bridwell

Chuck Bridwell has served as Minister of Music at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco, Texas since 1999, overseeing a music program that includes nine choirs, an orchestra, and numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles with a combined membership exceeding 600 musicians. His career in church music spans decades across Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Florida, and he holds degrees from Oklahoma Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Bridwell's leadership extends beyond his home church. He has held presidencies in multiple regional and state music organizations, contributed to the Baptist Church Music Conference's Executive Council, and currently teaches church music as an adjunct instructor at Baylor University while advising the university's Center for Christian Music Studies.

Why we love this

This arrangement takes a familiar novelty concept and executes it with the polish that comes from someone deeply experienced in leading volunteer choirs. Bridwell knows how to keep voices engaged and entertained without sacrificing musical integrity, which makes this perfect for holiday programming that needs to land with both performers and audiences.

What to expect

Playful and festive, with the warmth of familiar material reimagined through multiple musical lenses. The arrangement balances lighthearted novelty with genuine musical substance, inviting singers to enjoy the concept without feeling like they're performing something disposable.

Who it's for

Church choirs, community choirs, and holiday-focused vocal ensembles looking for a crowd-pleasing arrangement that works for mixed voices. This sits well for groups with solid blend and basic rhythmic security but without demanding soloistic maturity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the character shifts between themes. Each variation should feel intentional and distinct, so rehearse the transitions carefully so the ensemble knows when the musical personality changes.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock the harmonic framework and let singers focus on the melodic and textural details that make each theme pop.
  • Maintain rhythmic precision during the novelty sections. Humor lands best when the ensemble is together and confident, not sloppy.

How to use it

Schedule this as a second-half opener or closing piece in a Christmas concert to reset the energy after a block of traditional carols. It works especially well when paired with other seasonal selections that allow the ensemble to shift between reverent and celebratory moods.

Skills your students will build

  • Articulation clarity in fast passages
  • Harmonic awareness across varied arrangement styles
  • Stylistic flexibility and character singing
  • Ensemble blend and balance in four-part writing
