Oh yeah, a funky New Orleans groove garnished with chicken flavor! Played at around 160 BPM, the lead trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff and includes suggested written solos for tenor 1 and trombone 1. Very accessible writing that will please. (4:15)

More about this title

About the Composer: Kris Berg

Kris Berg

Kris Berg directs the jazz program at Collin County Community College in Texas, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. His arranging and composing work has circulated internationally, establishing him as a prolific voice in contemporary big band writing for Belwin Jazz. Berg founded and directs both the Collin Jazz Fest and the Texas All-Star Jazz Camp, and his ensembles have earned multiple invitations to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Beyond the classroom and festival circuit, Berg maintains an active career as a clinician and endorsing artist for Yamaha Corporation of America. He has performed and recorded alongside notable jazz musicians including Kurt Elling, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, and Clark Terry. His pedagogical contributions extend to the published method book Bass Lines in Minutes, which reflects his commitment to making jazz fundamentals accessible to developing musicians.

Why we love this

This funky New Orleans groove sits right in the sweet spot for Grade 2.5 ensembles: straightforward enough that younger players won't struggle with the fundamentals, but genuine enough that it doesn't feel like a simplified compromise. Berg's touch for accessible writing shines here, and the suggested solos for tenor 1 and trombone 1 give your section leaders something to sink their teeth into without requiring advanced improvisation skills.

What to expect

Infectious and lighthearted, with that unmistakable New Orleans funk energy that makes audiences smile the moment the tune starts. The groovy, unhurried feel at 160 BPM invites your ensemble to settle into the pocket and enjoy the ride, while the "chicken flavor" referenced in the title adds personality and humor that resonates with both players and listeners.

Who it's for

Jazz ensemble directors working with Grade 2.5 groups who want repertoire that teaches fundamental jazz language without overwhelming their players. Ensembles at the intermediate level benefit most from the accessible voicings and straightforward groove structure, while soloists get a genuine opportunity to contribute beyond the section.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the groove at 160 BPM during sectional rehearsals before full ensemble run-throughs; the rhythmic pocket is the piece's foundation, so rhythm section and horn attacks need to align early.
  • Work the trumpet solo range (written G) carefully with your lead player to ensure comfort with the upper register demands without sacrificing tone quality.
  • Let the tenor 1 and trombone 1 soloists explore their suggested parts in private lessons or sectionals first, then bring prepared ideas back to the full ensemble.
  • Emphasize the New Orleans funk character through articulation and phrasing choices; this isn't bebop, so encourage your players to feel the pocket rather than overthink the harmonic movement.

How to use it

Program this early in your jazz concert where you need an immediate energy boost and crowd engagement. It works beautifully as a closer to a first set or paired with other accessible funk and New Orleans-style pieces to build a coherent stylistic block. The piece's 4:15 length gives you flexibility in concert pacing without requiring a lengthy time commitment in rehearsal.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing with consistent groove and pocket feel in a funk context
  • Reading and performing chord changes in a jazz ensemble setting
  • Balancing section sound while maintaining individual articulation and phrasing
  • Soloing over a blues or funk progression (tenor 1 and trombone 1)
  • Responding to upper-register trumpet writing without sacrificing tone
