More about this title

About the Composer: JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall

JaRod Hall is a Texas-based composer and educator who earned degrees in music education from the University of North Texas and Texas State University, studying composition with Dr. Michael Ippolito and Dr. Jack Wilds. As a band director for eight years, he developed a consistent track record of state-level recognition, including the first Citation of Excellence awarded to a non-varsity middle school band in Frisco ISD history.

Beyond the classroom, Hall is an accomplished performer on tuba and trombone who has appeared with ensembles including the North Texas Wind Symphony, the 3 O'Clock Lab Band, and the Texas State Wind Symphony (where he served as principal tuba). A four-time Texas All-State Band member and participant in the 2014 Disneyland All-American College Band, his compositions have earned spots on the Texas Prescribed Music List, J.W. Pepper's Editor's Choice selections, and the Bandworld Top 100. His brass work "Silver Fanfare" won the 2020 Dallas Winds Call for Fanfares, and his grade 2 concert band piece "Through the Storm" received the 2021 Barbara Buehlman Prize.

Why we love this

Hall crafts a Grade 2 work that avoids sentimentality while delivering genuine emotional weight through the careful interweaving of three distinct musical threads. The piece respects both the gravity of its subject matter and the developmental needs of young musicians, creating an opportunity for bands to engage with meaningful patriotic literature without overreaching technically.

What to expect

Ultimate Valor carries a reverent, reflective quality as familiar melodies resurface and intertwine, evoking private moments of remembrance alongside communal pride. The orchestration honors tradition while remaining clear and transparent, allowing the emotional arc to settle naturally within the ensemble's capacity.

Who it's for

This conductor score is designed for Grade 2 concert bands preparing festival or contest repertoire with meaningful cultural and patriotic content. It serves musicians who are ready to engage thoughtfully with memorial themes and want accessible writing that doesn't diminish the subject matter.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the quotations carefully so each thematic fragment emerges with clarity; younger ensemble players benefit from rehearsal sectionals that isolate the individual melodies before blending them in context.
  • Pay attention to the overall arch and pacing across the three minutes; resist the temptation to rush through the material, letting the nostalgic elements breathe.
  • Use the patriotic character of the source material as a touchstone for tone and articulation choices. Clarity and respect in execution will elevate the student experience considerably.

How to use it

Program this work in a concert devoted to patriotic or commemorative themes, or position it as a thoughtful addition to a fall festival season where bands value both artistry and content depth. Its three-minute duration makes it an ideal pairing with lighter concert band selections, creating meaningful contrast on a mixed program.

Skills your students will build

  • Balancing multiple melodic lines within Grade 2 harmonic language
  • Sustained phrasing and control of long musical lines
  • Recognizing and performing thematic material derived from well-known patriotic sources
  • Expressive conducting and ensemble response to emotional architectural intent
