Description
Alfred Music's Ultimate Christmas Instrumental Solos series offers a versatile selection of Christmas music for flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, violin, viola, and cello. Each book contains carefully edited arrangements appropriate to each instrument, and well suited for level 2-3 students. Popular carols are presented both individually and in medleys and suites. "Celebration Medley" includes the cheerful classics "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Joy to the World." "Manger Medley" incorporates unique arrangements of "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night." And "Carol Medley" features songs great for caroling, such as "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and "The First Noel." Suites include "Themes from The Nutcracker Suite," which showcases the famous "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" and "March"; and "Folk Carol Suite," which contains the well-known "Coventry Carol (Lullay, Thou Little Tiny Child)." These suites are especially adaptable, with movements or themes that can be played consecutively, as one large piece, or on their own---each section is conveniently printed on a single page and has its own separate track on the provided recording. The audio includes a fully orchestrated DEMO track of each song, which features a live instrumental solo performance, followed by a PLAY-ALONG track. Also included are PDFs of piano accompaniments, and Alfred's Tempo Changer Software.

More about this title

Why we love this

The flexibility here is exceptional. Each movement of every suite fits on a single page with its own accompaniment track, so you can program "Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy" solo or combine it with "March" depending on your concert needs. The dual-track format (demo followed by play-along) gives students a clear model before they perform, building confidence without requiring live accompaniment rehearsals.

What to expect

Warm and celebratory. The medleys capture the joy of familiar carols while the suites (especially The Nutcracker selections) bring moments of elegance and drama. Even at level 2-3, these arrangements respect the melodic beauty of the songs rather than simplifying them into unrecognizable fragments.

Who it's for

Violin students in their second or third year of study who are ready to move beyond beginning method books but still need accessible, carefully edited repertoire. This book works equally well for private studio lessons and group string classes, offering solo material that feels substantial without technical overreach.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the demo track multiple times before the first read-through. Hearing the idiomatic phrasing and articulation for each arrangement will accelerate learning and improve intonation from the start.
  • Use the Tempo Changer Software to slow down tricky passages in the medleys without losing pitch. The transitions between carol segments can feel rushed at performance tempo until students internalize the shifts.
  • Balance vibrato carefully in the slower movements like "Away in a Manger." The original song's intimacy can disappear if vibrato obscures the melodic line; less is often more in these arrangements.

How to use it

Slot individual carols into holiday concerts throughout December, or program an entire medley as a standalone piece on a winter pops program. The suite format also works beautifully as a bridge piece between ensemble numbers, giving your violin section a chance to shine while allowing other instruments to rest.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing longer melodic phrases with consistent tone quality
  • Managing transitions between distinct sections of medleys and suites
  • Balancing vibrato in both fast and lyrical passages
  • Responding to clear harmonic structures in the accompaniment recordings
  • Developing confidence with performance recordings as learning tools
