Description
The U.Play.Plus Series, arranged by Victor López (Flex-Ability Series), provides solos, duets, trios, quartets, and larger ensembles with flexible instrumentation. Each book has a two-line score for every title. The top line (A) is the melody. The second line (B, C, or D) may be played as a duet with line A and is one of the four-part harmony lines. Adding instruments with B, C, and D lines will complete the harmony. Cue notes are included to fill in missing parts. Woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion may play together, with or without the rhythm section accompaniment (Piano/Guitar/Score book) or the CD (available separately). The CD includes a concert B-flat tuning note and two tracks for each song. The first is a demonstration track, and the second is the rhythm section accompaniment (piano, guitar, electric bass, and drums). Titles: Any Way You Want It * Baby * Born to Be Somebody * Celebration * Danger Zone * Dream a Little Dream of Me * Dynamite * Living in America * Raiders March * Take the "A" Train.

More about this title

About the Arranger: Victor López

Victor López is an arranger and composer whose work in the Flex-Ability and U.Play.Plus series has made ensemble music accessible to mixed instrumental groups. His arrangements prioritize flexibility without sacrificing musical integrity, allowing bands and orchestras of any size and instrumentation to perform repertoire together.

Why we love this

López's arrangements of popular songs give your flute and oboe players genuine musical satisfaction without requiring a full instrumentation. The melody sits beautifully in the woodwind range, and the harmonic flexibility means you can use this across grade levels and with whoever shows up on rehearsal day.

What to expect

High-energy pop and rock filtered through clear, singable melodies and intelligent harmonic support. These arrangements breathe with the idiom of their source material, groovy, driving, and unapologetically fun, while staying accessible enough that the technical demands never eclipse the musicality.

Who it's for

Flute and oboe players in grades 2.5-3 who want to play modern repertoire that feels relevant. This book works equally well for mixed woodwind ensembles as it does for a single flute or oboe soloist with accompaniment.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line with the harmony parts when playing duets or larger ensembles; the A line carries the song, but B, C, and D lines should support without overwhelming.
  • Use cue notes strategically to fill gaps when certain instruments are absent from rehearsal, so the ensemble sound stays complete and students hear the full harmony.
  • Pair these arrangements with the recorded accompaniment (available separately) to give students context for tempo and groove; pop and rock songs rely on rhythmic pocket as much as pitch accuracy.

How to use it

Slot these into a pop-focused concert, a themed evening of crossover repertoire, or a pops matinee where you're mixing classical and contemporary music. They're also ideal for small group performances when you have a duo or trio of woodwinds who want to branch beyond traditional chamber music.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in syncopated pop and rock styles
  • Ensemble balance between melody and harmony lines
  • Flexible instrumentation reading (cue notes and optional parts)
  • Stylistic interpretation of popular songs at an accessible level
