About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began playing piano by ear at age four in northwestern Pennsylvania and pursued formal training through the Warren Conservatory of Music and State University of New York at Fredonia, where she earned her B.S. in Music Education. She taught vocal music in upstate New York and instructed at the international Yamaha Music School before moving to Nashville, where a visit to her songwriter brother John W. Thompson led to work transcribing piano arrangements.

Over four hundred solo piano collections bear Tornquist's name, built on her gift for crafting playable, musically sophisticated arrangements that honor both traditional and contemporary worship contexts. Since joining Alfred in 2010, she has become known for settings that reimagine familiar melodies through fresh harmonic and rhythmic choices. Her arrangements serve pianists and students across skill levels, reflecting her enduring commitment to creating accessible yet carefully crafted resources.

Why we love this

Tornquist's arrangements strike a genuine balance between accessibility and musicality; these aren't simplified transcriptions but thoughtfully voiced settings that sound impressive even at easy level. The inclusion of lyrics and chord symbols makes this collection equally valuable for accompanying singers in worship, youth groups, or casual sing-alongs, expanding its utility far beyond solo performance.

What to expect

These arrangements radiate warmth and sincerity without sacrificing sophistication. Each song retains its emotional core while gaining a fresh piano voice—bright in moments of joy, contemplative during verses of reflection, always singable and never overwrought.

Who it's for

Church pianists accompanying worship services or leading sing-alongs will find immediate, usable material that fits traditional, blended, and contemporary settings. Students building their repertoire in contemporary Christian styles and developing their arranging ear will benefit from studying Tornquist's harmonic choices and rhythmic approaches across fifty different songs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay attention to the chord symbols and harmonic color Tornquist suggests; her voicings are intentional and often richer than they appear on first reading.
  • Use the lyrics as a musical guide rather than just text; they shape the phrasing and emotional contour of each arrangement.
  • Balance accompaniment texture with the melody so the song's singability remains clear for anyone joining in.
  • Lean into the rhythmic character of each contemporary style; Tornquist's settings capture the pulse of modern worship without adding unnecessary complexity.

How to use it

Draw from this collection throughout the year as accompaniment for congregational singing or youth group worship moments. Individual pieces work well as Sunday offertory selections or as part of a contemporary Christian music service, and the full volume serves as a year-round resource for any pianist leading worship in a church setting.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading chord symbols and realizing harmonic voicings in contemporary styles
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment to support singers

  • Interpreting expressive nuance within accessible technical ranges
