More about this title

About the Author: James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar

James D. Ployhar has shaped music education through prolific composition and curricular design, with over 800 published works to his name. His Contemporary Band Course, now published by Alfred Music, has become a foundational resource in band programs across North America and beyond, including widespread adoption throughout Norway after translation into local languages. Ployhar's training in orchestration came through direct study with master teachers including Knud Havalde of the Danish Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and his academic preparation included graduate composition work at California State University-Long Beach.

Beyond composition, Ployhar has spent two decades in public school music education and established himself as a sought-after clinician and conductor at the college and university level. His work has been performed internationally across Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim, and his contributions to band music earned him the National Band Association Citation of Excellence. He holds degrees from Valley City State University and Northern Colorado University, and maintains active membership in the American Bandmasters Association.

Why we love this

This book cuts through the noise by isolating the four fundamentals that separate solid cornet players from exceptional ones. Ployhar and Zepp structured each page to build facility and control in parallel, so your section develops a unified sound while individual players strengthen their command of the instrument. The 32-page format respects rehearsal time; you can work through this methodically without derailing your concert preparations.

What to expect

A no-frills, purposeful workout. Each exercise zeroes in on a single technical demand, building from accessible patterns toward greater precision. The straightforward approach creates space for players to listen critically to their own sound.

Who it's for

B-flat cornet players building foundational technical control and sound quality. Conductors and section leaders looking for focused supplementary material that strengthens articulation, intonation, and tone without consuming hours of rehearsal time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a consistent warm-up routine that mirrors the book's focus areas; revisit earlier pages regularly rather than pushing straight through to maintain progress on intonation and articulation.
  • Record section runs through selected exercises and play them back as a group to develop ear for blend and balance; players often hear problems in their own sound only when listening to the ensemble together.
  • Coordinate tonguing approaches across the section before tackling technically demanding passages; uniform articulation style will strengthen rhythmic cohesion and overall tone quality.
  • Assign individual players specific exercises to work at home between band rehearsals, targeting their particular trouble spots with tone production or intonation.

How to use it

Integrate this into your regular rehearsal structure by dedicating 5 to 10 minutes each session to one or two exercises from the book, cycling through the material over several weeks. This approach works especially well early in the season when establishing section fundamentals, or mid-season when you want to refocus on core technique without introducing new concert repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Consistent tone production and resonance across the cornet's range
  • Clean articulation and tonguing control
  • Accurate intonation in both isolated passages and section context
  • Technical facility and fluidity in finger patterns
  • Endurance and breath management
