More about this title
About the Composer: Rod Temperton
Rod Temperton was the keyboardist and primary songwriter for The Commodores before becoming one of the most prolific hitmakers in pop music history. He composed and produced some of Michael Jackson's most enduring work, including the title track and much of the sonic architecture of the Thriller album. His production philosophy balanced infectious grooves with sophisticated harmonic arrangements, making pop music that worked equally well on radio and in live performance.
Beyond Jackson, Temperton's fingerprints appear across the soundtracks of the 1980s and 1990s, from film scores to television themes. His ability to craft hooks that stick with audiences while maintaining musical integrity made him invaluable to artists seeking that crossover sound. For music educators, his work demonstrates how pop composition can demand serious musicianship from performers.
Why we love this
Thriller is instantly recognizable and has genuine Halloween appeal, but what makes this arrangement special is Mike Story's restraint. Rather than overcomplicating the groove, he's stripped it down to Grade 2 fundamentals while keeping the piece's unmistakable identity intact. Your students will sound like they're performing a real pop hit, not a simplified version of one.
What to expect
The moment your band locks into the opening groove, you're in the dark disco of the original. There's a theatrical edge beneath the pop sheen, with that creeping minor-key vibe that made Thriller both a party anthem and genuinely eerie. The arrangement preserves the menace while keeping the energy propulsive and fun.
Who it's for
This works for high school marching bands at any competitive level and for middle school bands with strong fundamentals. Grade 2 doesn't mean simplistic; it means the part-writing is clear and the ranges are reasonable, but the style demands solid section cohesion and rhythmic maturity. Halloween festivals, pep rallies, and October competitions are obvious homes for this one.
How to get the most out of it
- Lock the rhythm section (bass, drums, percussion) into a tight groove first. The pocket is everything here; once the low end is solid, the horns will sit naturally on top.
- Avoid rushing the iconic synth line. It sits slightly behind the beat, giving the arrangement its signature swagger. Rehearse with the recorded accompaniment to internalize that timing.
- Balance the melody between sections thoughtfully. The hook passes between trumpet, saxes, and trombone; make sure each voice has room to breathe without getting buried.
- Bring out the percussion details. The shaker patterns and kick drum articulations give this chart its contemporary feel and should stay crisp even at moderate volumes.
How to use it
The Halloween connection makes this an obvious October festival pick, but consider programming it outside that window during a fall or spring concert focused on pop and film music. It pairs well with other accessible rock or pop arrangements, and the recognizability factor draws audiences in immediately. Even a short concert can benefit from at least one piece the entire audience knows by heart.
Skills your students will build
- Maintaining a steady groove against syncopated figures in other sections
- Balancing melody lines between instrument groups
- Executing tight rhythm section coordination (bass, drums, percussion)
- Responding to dynamic control in contemporary pop style
