More about this title

About the Composer: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock's career spans performance, composition, and music education at the highest levels. A trumpet player who performed with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra and Miami Opera Company, as well as with regional and national touring ensembles, he brings practical knowledge of what works on stage. He holds degrees through the doctoral level in music education and has published over 600 compositions and arrangements across concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and marching band.

Bullock spent two decades teaching instrumental music in schools and universities, including seven years as an assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. His contributions to music education extend to co-authoring the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and arranging for Music Expressions, a comprehensive school music curriculum. He has led clinics and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, and England, and has been an ASCAP member since 1980.

Why we love this

These openers deliver immediate impact without requiring extended rehearsal time at a Grade 3 level, making them ideal for directors who want polished programming without sacrificing ensemble development. Bullock's experience scoring for military bands (groups known for their precision and musicianship) ensures the writing is both playable and genuinely impressive to listen to. The set gives you flexibility to choose the right opener for your concert's tone and energy level.

What to expect

Each opener establishes authority from the first measure, with dramatic effects that command audience attention and set a professional tone for the program. The writing captures the precision and impact associated with military band traditions while remaining accessible to developing musicians.

Who it's for

Concert band directors at the middle school through early high school level who want to open programs with works that sound polished and memorable without demanding advanced technique. These pieces suit ensembles that have solid fundamentals in place and are ready to tackle ensemble coordination and dramatic interpretation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the dramatic effects with clear articulation in the opening statement; let the design of these pieces speak through precision rather than volume alone.
  • Use the conductor score to establish the pulse and visual cues early in rehearsal, since the openers' effectiveness depends on ensemble confidence and tight ensemble response.
  • Work the individual parts separately before full-band runthrough to ensure each section understands its role in building the overall effect.
  • Record a complete runthrough at performance tempo and listen back as a band; these openers work best when the ensemble can hear how their individual contributions create the professional sound.

How to use it

Open your concert with one of these to establish energy and focus from the start, setting up whatever program follows with confidence and polish. Choose based on the mood you want to establish: they work equally well before a lighter concert or as the dramatic prelude to a more serious program.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing dramatic effects and sudden dynamic contrasts
  • Balancing individual part clarity within full-band texture
  • Responding to conductor cues with precision and ensemble awareness
  • Interpreting music written for professional-level performance contexts
