About the Arranger: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner brings three decades of high school music direction into every arrangement he creates. A Butler University graduate with degrees in music at both undergraduate and graduate levels, Wagner spent thirty years shaping young musicians before committing himself fully to composition and arranging work.

Since 1973, Wagner has published over 3,500 works across choirs, bands, orchestras, handbells, organ, piano, and voice. His music has circulated globally, performed in concert halls and broadcast on radio and television throughout the United States and internationally. More than seventeen million copies of his compositions have been purchased by musicians worldwide. Wagner resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.

Why we love this

Wagner's decades in the classroom shine through in this arrangement. The folk melody sits naturally for choir voices while the recorded accompaniment keeps students engaged and supports confident singing without requiring a pianist at every rehearsal.

What to expect

Honest and direct, this arrangement captures the warmth of a folk song shared among friends. The melody has the quality of something people already know or wish they did, with a gentle sincerity that makes singers sound their best.

Who it's for

This arrangement works well for school choirs building confidence in ensemble singing and for church choirs seeking accessible, meaningful secular repertoire. Singers at all levels will connect with the straightforward melody and familiar folk idiom.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody across your section; this folk tune thrives when every singer contributes to a warm, unified line rather than having soloists carry the tune.
  • Listen closely to the recorded accompaniment in early rehearsals to internalize the harmonic movement, then gradually reduce your dependence on it as confidence grows.
  • Shape the phrase endings with slight breath points and dynamic softening to let the melody breathe naturally, especially if the text suggests a reflective moment.

How to use it

Program this as a contrast to more complex choral works, or use it early in a concert to establish an intimate connection with your audience. The folk style pairs naturally with other accessible choral selections or instrumental pieces that celebrate American or traditional music.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing folk melody with clarity and warmth
  • Following a recorded accompaniment while maintaining independent vocal lines
  • Shaping phrase endings with intentional breath and dynamics
  • Balancing individual voice parts within an ensemble blend
