About the Arranger: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music education for over three decades, serving as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at major educational publishers, including Alfred Music. A prolific composer and arranger with more than 600 choral works in print, she has received the ASCAP Special Music Award annually since 1987 and conducted honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. Her work with choral movement and accessibility has made her a sought-after clinician nationwide. She currently resides in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht's arrangement respects the spiritual weight of this traditional piece while making it genuinely singable for mixed ensembles of varying experience levels. The writing captures what matters most in sacred music: clarity of text, emotional authenticity, and moments that let singers breathe and connect with the material.

What to expect

A sense of steady calm and purposeful reflection. The arrangement draws on the contemplative nature of traditional spirituals while maintaining musical integrity and harmonic richness that engages singers throughout.

Who it's for

Mixed choirs seeking repertoire that honors traditional spiritual material without demanding advanced voice leading or unusual ranges. Directors programming concerts, worship services, or festivals that call for accessible sacred music with emotional resonance.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts so the text remains intelligible throughout; clarity serves the spiritual message more than volume.
  • Work for sustained, even tone in the longer phrases rather than pushing for dramatic dynamics; restraint often deepens impact in spiritual music.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment during rehearsal to establish secure harmonic foundation before voices sing independently.

How to use it

Pair this with other spirituals or sacred selections to create a themed set within a concert. Its accessibility makes it ideal for community choirs or intergenerational performances where singers of different experience levels participate together.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and sustaining longer melodic lines with consistent breath support
  • Balancing ensemble sound across multiple voice parts
  • Interpreting text with sincerity in sacred music contexts
  • Maintaining tuning and blend in sustained harmonies
