About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over three decades, both as a prolific composer and as a publisher's director of choral publications. Her catalog exceeds 600 choral works and 75 musicals, earning her annual ASCAP Special Music Awards since 1987. She has conducted honor choirs at major venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and brings particular expertise to choral movement and staging.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977, and M.M. in Accompanying, 1979). She has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, where she serves on the Board of Trustees. She lives in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht's gift for weaving movement and staging into choral writing shines here, transforming what could be a novelty into an engaging performance experience. The accessible voicing works across multiple choir levels, and the recorded accompaniment option reduces rehearsal strain during the busy holiday season. This is exactly the kind of secular holiday piece that energizes young singers without oversimplifying the musical content.

What to expect

Playful and driving, with the rhythmic momentum of a contemporary rock-influenced novelty number. The piece captures the irreverent energy of reindeer on stage, inviting singers and audiences alike to embrace the humor and movement rather than treating the holiday season with reverence alone.

Who it's for

Choirs at the middle school, high school, and community level looking for an uplifting secular holiday selection that lets singers move and have fun. Groups with mixed or changing membership benefit from the accessible 2-Part/SSA voicing, which doesn't require extensive vocal range or part independence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Plan blocking early in the rehearsal process so singers have time to internalize both the music and movement vocabulary before performance.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment as a rehearsal tool to lock ensemble rhythm and tempo, especially if your accompanist is unavailable for regular sectional work.
  • Encourage singers to match the energy and attitude of the recorded version during early run-throughs; the novelty style depends on ensemble commitment to the groove.

How to use it

Slot this after a more traditional carol or sacred piece to shift the concert mood and energize the audience. The movement component makes it ideal for informal holiday performances, pep rallies, or community events where a lighter touch serves the program better than solemn programming alone.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in contemporary (rock-influenced) styles
  • Following choreography while maintaining vocal control and blend
  • Ensemble cohesion across two or three independent voice parts
  • Confidence in novelty and secular holiday repertoire
