About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped choral music education for over three decades, serving as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications for major educational publishers, including Alfred Music. Her catalog of more than 600 published choral works and 75 songbooks and musicals reflects her deep understanding of what works in rehearsals and on stage. She has been recognized annually by ASCAP for her contributions since 1987 and has conducted honor choirs at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977, and M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University in Michigan, Jersey City State College in New Jersey, and Meredith College in North Carolina. Her distinctive approach to choral movement and staging has influenced how teachers approach rehearsal and performance across the country. She currently resides in Wake Forest, North Carolina, with her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse.

Why we love this

Albrecht understands the energy and humor that keeps singers engaged during the holiday season. This piece moves beyond tired arrangements to deliver genuine fun while remaining musically substantial. The built-in staging and movement options mean minimal choreography prep on your part while giving students a reason to get out of their chairs.

What to expect

A playful collision between holiday tradition and contemporary groove, this piece captures the spirit of a rock concert filtered through Christmas nostalgia. Singers will feel the lift of an infectious rhythm while delivering something genuinely entertaining to their audience.

Who it's for

Middle school and high school choirs looking for a fresh holiday selection that works for both 2-part and SSA voicings. Directors seeking material that balances musical credibility with genuine student engagement will find this particularly useful.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lean into the rock groove to distinguish this from traditional holiday fare; the rhythm section and accompaniment will anchor the feel, so encourage singers to trust the pulse rather than rushing.
  • Block the movement during an early rehearsal so singers see how their parts interact spatially; this clarifies entrances and gives them ownership of the arrangement.
  • Bring energy to the recorded accompaniment without overdoing dynamics; let the novelty in the musical content carry the humor rather than forcing expression in other ways.

How to use it

Place this in a winter concert where it can anchor a lighter, more contemporary segment; it pairs well alongside a cappella pieces or traditional carols, creating welcome textural variety. The novelty and staging make it an ideal opening or closing number for holiday performances.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining rhythmic integrity in contemporary groove styles
  • Executing choreographed movement while singing
  • Balancing musical humor with technical accuracy
  • Reading and performing SSA and 2-part voicings in the same piece
