About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober composes with her students at the center of every decision. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois and a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where she studied under Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich. Her 20 years teaching piano in public schools and additional university-level instruction have shaped her gift for writing pieces that ignite musical curiosity.

An accomplished church pianist and former music director, Melody brings both performance rigor and pedagogical insight to her work. She remains actively involved in the piano teaching community as a clinician and workshop leader throughout North America, and she maintains a thriving private studio in Minnesota.

Why we love this

The 6/8 meter draws students into an infectious rhythmic groove that feels modern and engaging without demanding advanced technique. Parallel thirds in the right hand build hand independence and interval awareness in a musical context that never feels like drill work. This piece programs beautifully on recitals where you want something joyful that still showcases legitimate intermediate-level musicianship.

What to expect

Bright and buoyant, with the warmth of folk tradition. The mariachi style brings infectious energy that makes the listener smile without ever feeling trivial.

Who it's for

Students solidifying their intermediate technique and ready to tackle rhythmic independence between hands. This piece works equally well for students building confidence through a culturally engaging repertoire or preparing material for festival and competition play.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the left-hand single notes crisp and rhythmically precise; they're the pulse that makes the mariachi character land.
  • Let the parallel thirds flow naturally without pushing the tempo; 6/8 breathes when you honor its lilting quality.
  • Balance the hands so the melody in the thirds sings clearly over the accompaniment pattern.

How to use it

Pair this on a spring recital with a more introspective piece to show range, or program it as an opener to set an uplifted tone for your concert. It also earns its place on a festival schedule where variety and accessible joy matter alongside technical demonstration.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing in 6/8 meter
  • Playing parallel thirds with hand independence
  • Maintaining rhythmic precision in the left hand while managing melodic material in the right
  • Interpreting cultural style markers in contemporary composition
